How do you handle client demands that clash with your style?
-
Balance your vision by aligning on a shared goal: combine your expertise with their preferences. Suggest a middle ground where trendy elements enhance, rather than overpower, your style. This ensures both client satisfaction and creative integrity.

I would ask more questions to discover why they feel they need this style? It could be they just like a certain trend without fully understanding how that would impact or work and perform for their business? If you know their usage outcomes you can persuade them to agree to the right style. If they still insist and its not your think decline the work.

When a client requests trendy photos that don’t align with my style, I prioritize open communication. I ask about their vision and explain how my approach focuses on timeless imagery that transcends fleeting trends. Sometimes, it’s about letting the client know on how timeless photos often outlast trends and ensuring that their memories remain evergreen. However, I also strive to honor their preferences by finding a middle ground—incorporating elements of the trend while staying true to my brand. This way, the client feels heard, and I maintain the integrity of my work. It’s a collaboration, ensuring they walk away from my studio with photos they’ll cherish long after the trend fades!

There is always a common ground and a compromise. The first conversation should start with clarifying and presenting my style. Then try to break down what parts of the trend appeals to them and how it will work for their business or purpose. Ultimately, it comes down to creative collaboration; any creative will leave their signature on any work they do, no matter how hard they suppress it.
