I work with an “everyone is a boss” mentality, especially when it comes to venue staff. I really encourage them to step up and be the best they can be. For some reason, when people work with me, they naturally want to put their best foot forward. I make sure to foster that culture by creating an environment where everyone feels like they have ownership and pride in what they’re doing. I lead by example, and I think that energy rubs off. It’s all about empowering the team, setting clear expectations, and showing that I believe in their abilities. That way, they’re motivated to bring their A-game every time.

Keep venue staff engaged with interesting work from time to time. For technical experts like those I work with is very important to let them express themselves by assigning them to creative jobs rather than venue supervision again and again.

In my years in event and concert production, empowering your crew to see their own talent and creative skills can go a long way to making a smooth event. Have faith in your crew, if you hired right they know what they are doing. Let them know you're in charge, but they are the unstoppable machine. If they're not up to it, time to move on.
