One thing I have found helpful , in this case you also have multiple suppliers to cater this sort of situation but don't compromise on quality. You can also forecast the actual quantity of inventory required on the basis of past historical data , planning plays a vital role in managing the shirt comes.

Building relationships is the key strategy that wil help you ask for last minute "Favors" from a supplier when a shortage in inventory happens closer or during events ! We used to have an annual event and we request printing companies to customise branded boxes where we put our chocolates and send to corporations as VIP gifts , during this high season most of suppliers do refuse to take the job if not given 2 months advance notice and we had kind of last minute order which noone has accepted to take , except this one that we had a good relationship with and that worked late at nights to make it happen!
