In my early career leading a clinical applications department, I recognized the gap between high-tech skills and the operational demands of clinical environments. As nurses, we make incredible executive leaders! It is incumbent upon us to never forget our clinical roots, and to bring that knowledge and experience forward into our leadership and business activities. Likewise, we don’t need to be intimidated by the world of business and executive leadership. If you can convince a stubborn post-op surgical patient to ambulate, and persuade them why it is in their best interest, then you certainly can negotiate a contract with a troublesome vendor. To my fellow nurses: if you get the chance, don’t pass up an opportunity to take the reins as an executive leader. It will forever change how you view our field and our profession. It did for me, and I’ll always be grateful for my years as an executive.
