You more than likely have traditional IT protocols like HTTP/HTTPS, SSH and SMB along with ICS/OT-specific protocols such as Modbus, S7, Profinet and BACnet. And at the same time, you can have stand-alone versions of these protocols or versions that run over TCP/IP. It's important to understand how these protocols work in your specific environment so you can then begin to understand how to protect against attacks the might take advantage of them.

Secure network architecture is the #1 way to reduce cyber security risk in an ICS/OT environment. Just like you wouldn't have an IT network connected to the Internet without a firewall, you need to at least make sure you have a firewall between your IT and ICS/OT networks. Ideally, you would have a true DMZ between the two networks implemented with two layers of physical firewalls from different vendors. And then, once inside the ICS/OT network, looks to standards such as ISA/IEC 62443 to properly segment the network into zones and conduits. Proper segmentation can help limit an attacker who gains a foothold in the environment, slowing them down and providing defenders with the chance to detect and stop them!

Encryption of network traffic in ICS/OT networks means that network security monitoring capabilities will not work by default. And in most of these environments, to be successful, these capabilities simply need to work.

Within minutes, you can have a complete testing lab at your disposal. Additionally, capture the flag events and bounty hunting offer an exciting way to enhance your skills. Join a group and start exploring.

Practice makes perfect. The more hands-on practice the more you broaden your understandin of how the security measures in different networks. Use open source tools in virtual labs like wireshark, nessus, Wazuh and also use packet tracer for setting up network infrastructure to understand network protocols, data transfers and real time simulations.

Whilst it is easy to just update everything in a rush it is important to have backups to previous versions in case vulnerabilities appear in the updates. This can be done with tools such as DD for Linux by just writing the bytes over to a storage device prior to updating or if possible alternating between devices between updates to have a roll out and roll back strategy.
