Autonomy and creative freedom are important - but this needs to be within a framework. Otherwise there is a high risk that teams come up with lots of scattergun ideas that the business won't value and want to invest in testing and developing. Developing a clear innovation strategy and process is important. So that teams know what problems / opportunities you want to address through innovation. And also how decisions will be made about what to progress and invest further in. Once you've given the team clarity on constraints and process then you can enable them to have freedom and autonomy within that framework - and that can unlock creativity.

Many of the ideas the team comes up with won't progress in their original form. Using a Lean Start Up test-and-learn approach can help a team identify it's key "idea killing assumptions" early on. The focus of the team is then on testing whether or not these assumptions are true. And evolving the idea (or killing it) based on what they learn. This approach shifts away from the idea of failure to testing and learning. Your focus is on finding a viable solution to a problem / opportunity statement, not on progressing a particular idea and then that "failing".

Too often innovation ends up as lots of scattergun ideas that don't go anywhere. For the people who've come up with those ideas and been excited about them that's very demotivating ... and can mean they don't keep contributing ideas in future. It's crucial that your innovation efforts are led by an innovation strategy. What are the problems you are trying to address? Or the opportunities you are trying to capture? The strategy should provide enough clarity about what you wants your innovation to deliver that the ideas generated are valuable and likely to secure budget and resource to progress. Also be clear on your innovation process - how you will subsequently make decisions about what to scale up and invest in as the idea progresses.
