Continuous learning is necessary in any field, and computer engineering advances at a breakneck speed. Get out of your comfort zone and embrace lifelong learning. If you are a backend engineer, learn DevOps. If you are DevOps, maybe MLOps. Just see what else is there and is new. Subscribe to good groups, newsletters, webinars, etc. Attend meetups, and conferences. Books are still a very good way of learning new stuff, not everything is on-line.

I was helping a guy to build a funny project. A wand that could throw some spells. On one hand, there was the engineer that was building the electronics, and the 3D printed model. I collaborated in training voice and gesture recognition. So, when you said the spell and moved the wand in some form, it will make the spell. This gave me a huge insight into how Tensorflow Lite worked, and then I applied that learning to my own projects, with full Tensorflow. Projects don't need to be in a lab, they can be with remote friends, for fun, and even remotely.
