Here's how you can demonstrate your leadership abilities when transitioning careers.

Reflecting deeply on past experiences is crucial when transitioning careers, it helps identify transferable skills. Embracing adaptability is key—being open to learning new things and adjusting to different environments shows resilience. Communicating a clear vision inspires others and builds trust. Building strong relationships is essential for networking and support. Leading by example and offering solutions demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skills. Additionally, staying positive and persistent is vital for a smooth transition.

All good things begin with ‘reflection’. It’s in times when the going becomes difficult that your leadership capabilities are put to true litmus tests. Whenever things get tough, remind yourself of your: 1. Values and core belief system: what do you stand for. 2. Leadership behaviours: what do you identify the most with, what is it that comes naturally to you. 3. Your purpose: why did you start off doing what you did, in the first place? It could be: help others be their best selves, ask thought provoking questions, tell the most interesting stories…whatever it is, reconnect with it. And find ways to demonstrate these (one, two or more behaviours). To be able to do that, you would have to begin with reflection.

Don't just think about a project you led or a person you coached--think about the meaning behind it. The techniques you employed. The journey you took. The positive impact that your work resulted in. When you elevate a situation to more general terms, you can more easily see how it is more widely applicable. Then, look for trends, and decide where you want to zero in, depending on the nature of your new position. For example, maybe you were in PR, and you're looking for a position in L&D; reflect on a time when you coached someone through a particular situation and all that it required--empathy, strategic alignment, structure, change management, messaging strategy, etc.--and think about how those skills can be applied in your new role.

Often what skills and traits that made us effective leaders at earlier stages, don’t translate into effective leadership at higher levels of responsibility. Beyond competency, moving from being the expert to positions leading larger teams of experts means leaders must be: Authentic Vulnerable Empathetic The first place to start with all this when transitioning (ideally before a transition) is with yourself. Reflect on your core values, passions, purpose and cause. Why are you here? What are you meant to do? Without that self awareness, you won’t effectively lead your teams.

If you want your team to be adaptable, you must provide the safe environment for them to know it’s ok to try new things and fail as long as they’re learning. Ask: How do you handle bad news? What does your personal willingness to receive negative feedback signal to the team? What processes do you have in place to incorporate lessons learned into future experiments?

By quickly adjusting to new environments and engaging with different teams, they demonstrate resilience and drive positive change. As a Leader, especially when transitioning careers, it's crucial to have a Learning mindset and set aside personal ego.
