Feedback or the updated version, which I like better, feedforward, is fundamental for professional and personal development. With changes taking place at an exponential rate from time to time, it is mandatory, especially for experienced professionals, to check that they are on the right pace, that their vision of the zeitgeist is correct, that their mind set is adjusted. The soul of an apprentice, that's my mantra. And for that, it's great to have the help of other people.

The important thing here is to NOT assume you've learned everything there is to learn. If the outlets in your field seem "stale" to you, explore another field to see what "lessons learned" can be carried over to your current context.

I always say that what gets me out of anachronism, or has been getting me out of anachronism, is my insistence and ability to keep asking questions. I think it's the result of having read the Book of Whys many times in my childhood, which was part of an encyclopedia called Treasure of Youth. This passion for why, and other question prompts, has stayed with me to this day in life as a whole and not just in the professional environment. Every question, if answered, is a new learning experience. If it's not answered, it's just room for more questions. And today's prompting techniques only reinforce this logic of multiple questions.

I found it very useful for my professional development to use my experience and mentor other leaders and managers who reported to me. I`m checking in regularly with my direct reports, and during 1:1 discussions, I can assess whether I need to have additional time with my colleague to focus on a specific challenge. I believe the best for this 1:1 mentoring is to have a lunch and coffee break where I can focus and engage meaningfully.

Ever since I was a child, I used to learn by imagining that one day I would have to teach the same subject to someone else. And so it was throughout my professional career. Becoming a mentor was a natural move that formalized something that happened spontaneously or on demand. Being a mentor brings a special satisfaction associated with legacy, with passing on what you have to others. It has to do with generosity and a social role. Best of all, it brings new perspectives, experiences and learning. Mentoring is an exchange. Always.

When I started my practice, I had no clue how to lead my business, pitch my services, ask for help, or seek clients. Everything changed when I intentionally began networking. It wasn’t just about handing out business cards at events; it was about learning from others and contributing to their success. The contacts I made opened doors that were previously closed to me. Networking taught me to be a better leader and how to borrow from others' successes. The journey has been incredibly enriching, and I’m grateful for the growth it brought me.

Late career professionals can easily fall into the Eternal Student trap. Always learning yet unable or unwilling to convert that knowledge into practical application that blesses others. 'Lifelong Learning' is an admirable quality punted regularly by most professions. It's silent twin: 'So That I Can Be of Better Service' is seldom even mentioned. To be most impactful, White Collar acquisition of knowledge absolutely needs to be coupled with Blue Collar application of knowledge. Find young people who are desperate to acquire your skills sets.
