Seeking a mentor or becoming one can provide new insights and strengthen your relationships. When you form a strong bond with an experienced professional in your field, it provides an opportunity to learn and improve. You benefit from their experience in your profession, enabling you to develop your professional skills. When you develop skills and knowledge with their help, it can boost your performance at work.

As an HR Specialist I would say one of the most important things to enhance professional connections beyond the mentioned pointers is building trust through authenticity. Authenticity involves being genuine in your interactions, sharing your true self & maintaining integrity in your professional relationships. When you are authentic, you foster trust & respect, which are foundational for strong, lasting connections. People are more likely to engage with & support someone who is transparent & sincere, rather than someone who is perceived as opportunistic or disingenuous. By being authentic, you create a deeper & more meaningful network, which can lead to more effective collaborations, greater influence & a stronger professional reputation.

We've all been there - trying to be heard in a meeting, feeling like our concerns are falling on deaf ears. But what if someone actually listened? I recall a meeting where my colleague expressed her worries about a project deadline. I made a conscious effort to put away my phone, maintain eye contact, and ask questions to ensure I understood her perspective. By doing so, she felt heard and valued. It's about effective communication. Understanding the parts of you that align with your audience and not withholding the value you have to share that will specifically help them. Yes, there is a place for quick & efficient communication in the work setting, but genuine engagement means heartfelt & personalized interaction. Asking questions, listening instead of just hearing, taking a personal interest in the other person. This applies to all types of engagement - in-person, over the telephone, via email or text. Those who make the emotional & time commitment to be truly engaged with colleagues are the ones who stand out, their strong interpersonal skills being an invaluable asset to the culture & community within their company.

For keeping up the connection, we must keep our continuity and Disciplined approach. Any gap would not be welcomed in a professional way. If we get ourselves gaps, there are many professionals to take our place. What we have to do is follow a regular routine to engage and communicate with other professionals. It is easy to make a routine and follow that constantly. Read and appreciate others posts and write a feedback comment. It will make you look more professional and valued at the same time will present you as a respectful professional.

I met someone in a supermarket carpark, who connected me with my most profitable client. What's cool about this, all conversations I have, follow an intentional plan - even the seemingly serendipitous one's. I've got a clear strategy for how to "show up" for people. My system works no matter where I am, where we meet, or who they are. I have found the "six degrees of separation" principle works (and have experimented with this live at an event to prove it). Giving out your business card is not networking. People know people who know people. It's not always about going the direct route, or discounting the strange person you met at the checkout. Being intelligent means, have a conscious plan - you never know who you might meet:)

By making connections authentically, offering to help new connections where possible - it’s important to add value as quickly as possible - and building relationships with senior-level folks in various industries, my reach and ability to get things done has increased exponentially. Start with passion, focus on adding value, connect authentically, and be direct about what you want to achieve!

Personally, I believe that feedback is essential for personal improvement. However, I also believe that people should be prepared to receive not only positive feedback, but also negative feedback. I also think that this is important so that we can know where we are failing and have the emotional intelligence to accept it, as good listeners, to see where we are going wrong and, most importantly, to find a way to correct what was done wrong.
