Once you recruit diverse talent, thoughtfully put the same or more energy into retention. A few examples based on my observations in research, nonprofit and industry individual contributor and leadership roles: - Fair and appropriate compensation packages with timely merit and cost of living increases - Suspend assumptions, and avoid tokenizing a few people as representatives for millions - Nomenclature changes often. Be respectful and you don’t need to memorize the latest identity language. - Avoid pushing service tasks onto “diverse” employees. Give them the resources, time, and space to do the job you pay them to do. Foster opportunities to connect, and allow employees to organically choose morale-building activities.
