Here's how you can identify when a leader should delegate more tasks to their team members.

It's easy for leaders to get overwhelmed when they begin to micromanage and get into the details and weeds of their direct reports. Resist micromanaging and establish accountability delegation empowering others to take on work that provides a stretch opportunity and growing new experiences and skills. It's a powerful opportunity to strategically delegate to lighten your leadership load, so you are doing what only you can do. You are also developing others by giving them opportunities to shine. It's an investment in succession planning as well.

Ideally, leaders won't wait until they're overwhelmed before delegating. If they do, they're likely to be delegating the pressure of the impending task rather than just the task itself. In order to prevent this, help leaders get into the practice of assessing each task as it comes their way, so they can decide who could do it, should do it or needs to learn how to do it. This requires a degree of discipline and organisation.

This is an important factor and the only way to be sure of this is to make sure that your delegation is a conversation and not a dumping. Steps in the delegation process include agreeing expectations and deadlines. That can't happen without conversation

Make sure that when you're skills matching you're also including those who need to develop skills in that particular task or piece of work. How else are your team members ever going to develop their competence? Delegation is done for more than efficiency.

They say it's lonely on top, but it doesn't have to be. Delegating wisely and implementing feedback loops create better results and keep you in regular contact with your team. Someone who collaborates and communicates regularly will certainly not feel lonely but surrounded by caring individuals - a true team.
