Refactoring is good, but you can certainly over refactor. I suggest that you write the code first with readability and maintenance in mind. Make sure to write with proper conventions and following any style guidelines set out by your employer. If you then see performance or maintenance problems, then look to refactor. Refactoring for the sake of refactoring is what gets a lot of programmers in trouble. This is because programmers, during refactoring, typically like to introduce "cleverness" which is either cryptic or introduces bugs.
