I would add the following warning: you may be able to make geologic maps using contours but you need to ensure the principles of geology are being followed. The best way to understand these is through a hand drawn contour map.

Basic knowledge of geological mapping is to understand the behavior of contours and related features mentioned in the topographical map prepared by Survey Departments . Afterwards superimposition of geological map of the area concerned and its relative relationship should be fully understood by drawing the cross - section. Thus geological history can be best understood. In this regard SRTM data can be more beneficial.
