As a small business owner of an online business that helps other small businesses, I've been fortunate enough to experience the transformative power of entrepreneurship firsthand. Being in a small business has shaped my life in ways I never could have imagined, and it's all thanks to the incredible relationships that have grown from it. For one, being a small business owner has given me the freedom to be my own boss, which has been a game-changer for my personal and professional life. I've been able to create a schedule that works for me, allowing me to spend quality time with my loved ones and pursue my passions. There's no better feeling than knowing that you've made a positive impact on someone's life.

To showcase your passion for small business during the job search, focus on practical experiences and specific skills. Highlight roles in small companies, entrepreneurial projects, or volunteer work that demonstrate your ability to thrive in dynamic environments. Emphasize your adaptability, problem-solving skills, and how you've contributed to growth or innovation. Share stories in interviews that reflect your commitment and understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within small businesses. Gosh... this is a soapbox-worthy topic. I wish every, single, solitary human had the experience of starting their own business. It is an incredible teacher and a way to have more compassion for others on their journey in the business of life.

I was always impressed with candidates who could list the goals they had in life or career first. But then could relate those goals to their "story" or how their life shaped those goals. For instance, if one of their goals was to "help people rise out of poverty", and then recounted a story about how someone helped them, maybe mentored them, this would resonate with me. Always have your story relate to the attributes of the job you are seeking.

Sharing your personal connection to small businesses can significantly enhance your job search narrative, particularly in the marketing industry. Highlighting experiences from a family-owned store or community impact stories can demonstrate your deep-rooted understanding and passion for small businesses. This not only showcases your skills but also your genuine commitment to the values that drive small businesses, making you a compelling candidate for roles that require a blend of digital marketing expertise and personal investment in the mission.

Being flexible within a small business is a great asset. If you can demonstrate that in your CV too that would be of benefit to those looking to employ you. Business owners wear various hats, and can often benefit from the same from their staff. Don’t be afraid to show the variety of skills you can bring, show that you’re prepared to get involved. Give examples of how you support small businesses, not just by buying from them, but maybe you’ve been involved with family or business events, using local businesses etc. I’d always look to see what they’re doing, where they are, online or at fairs etc & engage with them before you’ve even sent your CV in. Become known to them, show your support & your commitment to them.

If young in your career, any and all highlights working with clients, customers in small business are valuable. Don't overlook what you might feel is petty or small. Selling cookies or newspapers in high school (yes I am older-it is probably all online now), but helping at the local grocery, parking cars, busing tables, helping your uncle at his story part-time. This is valuable knowledge to a small business owner. It shows your character.

It's funny how networking is often approach as a method to "take" rather than "give." Yet the theory of reciprocity kicks in and the 'giver' can often get more than they receive.

Make a point of liking, commenting, and sharing posts - especially if you can add something valuable to the conversation. Aim to do this daily, even if it's just for a few minutes. 3. Ensure your LinkedIn work history and skills are up-to-date and accurate. 4. Create and post content that is relevant to your skills. This can be in the form of news, insights, listicles, or anything else that can showcase your knowledge, expertise, and passions. Make it a point to consistently post everyday.

It surprises me how many in the business world ignore online presence like LinkedIn or other media. Be disciplined and consistent in writing online. Have a well-thought out profile, garner recommendations, but also reach out to other posting online to start conversations as well as write posts or articles yourself. Small business employers today will always check on your online presence...and your online presence may create opportunities.

Additionally, networking with other volunteers and small business owners can lead to new connections and opportunities, enriching both your personal and professional life.

One of the major advantages of being a small business entrepreneur is the ability to interact with so many of my peers through membership in like minded organizations. My favorite is the local Chamber of Commerce. Unlike more formal groups, in the small business Chamber's of Commerce, arrogance and pomposity usually does not exist and the membership is mostly open and receptive to sharing marketing information and exchanging client contacts.
