How can GIS help you justify restoration strategies to clients?

GIS is one of my favorite software tools within our firm, which not only provides fundamental details about a property—such as its location, land use, and zoning—but also as an important resource for analyzing a property’s potential. It enables us to accurately determine features such as a property’s walkable radius of 0.5 miles in relation to a project, or to map out all nearby transit stops and mobility options. Incorporating this layered information plays a key role in enhancing our understanding, as well as in educating both clients and the public.

I can't imagine tackling large-scale architecture and urban landscape design without GIS tools. Data science has now become an essential skill for innovating in urban landscape design, transforming how we understand and shape our environments.

I was one of the first uses of the GIS in the US Forest Service Tongass National Forest in the 1979 - 1982. It's only gotten amazing useful and will continue to expand for uses.

GIS can be used as a platform for decisions support systems. Using quantified systems based on species specific habitat functions is the best way to target restoration projects to specifc populations.

GIS can be leveraged to assess restoration needs and opportunities in several ways: 1. Landscape Architects and Ecologists can utilize ArcGIS Field Maps to collect on the ground data. 2. Crowdsource applications can be used for anonymous reporting of restoration needs. 3. Diverse data layers and suitability analysis can help evaluate optimal site locations for restoration. 4. Maps and data visualization can effectively communicate findings and help make informed decisions.

By integrating and analyzing diverse data sources, we can unlock deeper insights into the urban fabric, making it the cornerstone of any successful project. This approach not only enhances our understanding but also ensures more informed, sustainable, and innovative solutions.

GIS aids in satisfying restoration strategies by analyzing ecological factors for site selection, such as soil type, slope, and proximity to water sources. It facilitates comprehensive ecological assessments and modeling to prioritize restoration areas. Through Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), GIS identifies risks and benefits, aiding in decision-making and mitigation planning. GIS enhances stakeholder engagement via visualizations, promoting transparency and collaboration. It assists in regulatory compliance by mapping protected areas and sensitive habitats. With resource allocation support, GIS optimizes budgeting for maximum impact. Monitoring progress and assessing effectiveness over time is streamlined through GIS integration.

GIS helped solve a lot of issues with a 375 acre high-end Resort and Residents project in Phuket Thailand. Post tsunami we were able to map the effects and design the project to sustain, to the degree it could, minimize future environmental impacts if an event happened again. The project was also 75% on heavily vegetative slope. We used GIS slope analysis for roads and sighting the Villas that assured views of the ocean. Lastly, there was an upland tin mine draining into and through the site. We were able to divert that runoff, thru GIS clean it thru water quality ponds to reduce turbidity and beautify the once contaminated runoff into a resort amenity. In the end, we had a very good, layered site analysis that guided our design.

We use GIS as part of our restoration design work from start to finish. As mentioned, it allows for spatial representation of elements within the landscape and topography. Water management is a major design driver for our work. While the data from GIS needs to be ground truthed for accuracy, utilizing that technology for understanding water movement across the landscape is critical to restoring and working with the hydrological cycle on a site. Finally, having the gis mapping available as a communication tool for understanding the design and implementation strategy, isa powerful component of restoration work, especially with multi-disciplinary teams.

I agree totally, like I said earlier, the applications are numerous and it’s easier to plan and find out root causes of degradation and put a nip to the bud. While also simulating the changes proposed for a solution and make sure your solution proffered is not the birth of a new problem

Public support for restoration is critical to permitting and funding success. Story maps are a great tool to help the public understand complex restoration projects, why real restoration is often expensive, and what the real impacts will be to the environment, humans, and target species.

Just like I said in my previous comment, GIS helps you simulate or create scenarios based on the information given and solutions proposed to help mitigate or totally solve any degradation. Planning the steps to be taking and running animations and simulation with various GIS softwares, will give your clients and idea of whatever solution proffered will affect various elements and stakeholders

Most time we encourage clients to allow us run data collections during the implementation of the solutions to degradation which falls under monitoring and evaluation. Once your plans for restoring degraded areas is being implemented, one has to run another GIS data capture and carry out another simulation to to make sure the proposed solution is in line with real life application of the solution. Once there is a digress from the plan, it’s best to stop and reevaluate actions to be taken in order to get the desired outcome
