How can Higher Education institutions ensure that e-learning programs are effective?

To enhance the effectiveness of e-learning programs, Higher Education institutions can focus on fostering a collaborative online community. For instance, implementing discussion forums and virtual study groups encourages students to actively participate in discussions, share insights, and learn from peers. This collaborative approach enhances comprehension and promotes a sense of community and shared learning experiences, contributing to the effectiveness of e-learning initiatives.

Recognise that different learners desire different outcomes and ensure the content offers multiple routes to value. E.g., some students (for many varied reasons) may want to/have to progress through content quickly and simply desire to complete the course. Others will have more time/interest and will prefer to engage with the content on a deeper level, internalizing concepts as they go. An effective course should enable both students to achieve their version of success by offering compulsory and optional levels of content depth.

AI can transform LMS to cater for high-ability students. I advocate for systems that not only identify these students but also offer them tailored challenges. Imagine LMSs where AI tracks progress and adapts content, proposing more complex projects or advanced discussions. For example, in one course I designed, we implemented a system that scaled the difficulty of problems based on student performance, allowing more advanced students to delve deeper into topics not normally addressed. Initially, this was a half-automatic process, but with the use of AI, this could be very scalable. This ensures that talented students remain engaged and motivated, raising the standard of our programme and making the most of each individual's potential.
