How can introverts build a professional network in product design?

“Being an introvert as a designer has its uniqueness and advantages.” A lot of times, we may be tempted to retract into our shells because it seems every other person is outspoken. However, the truth is that being outspoken isn't a guarantee of knowledge or substance. While networking, listen (your strength), learn and make contributions. Those silent thoughts in your headspace that you feel aren’t of much substance, may be fountains of knowledge for others. Know your value and never be shy to connect with other designers.

Remember that networking isn't just about making work or business connections but building actual relationships. For an introvert, networking might be extra draining if the small talk feels "empty" or "superficial". In addition to your value your genuine interests are also important. Use the things you enjoy, even if they're personal interests, to connect and have more interesting conversations. You'll be more likely to stay in touch and continue the conversation with the people you can relate to in different areas. Those connections will become more than business cards on your desk or numbers on your profile.

I think sometimes being an introvert is conflated with not wanting to socialize, empathize or be a part of various communities. But oftentimes, introversion is the exact opposite - it's the fear of failing at those things mentioned above despite a deep desire to connect. And it's this fear of failing / overthinking that actually becomes an introvert's superpower - lean into your empathy and design for those who feel sidelined!

Define Specific Goals: - Clearly outline your professional objectives in product design. - Identify areas of interest and target connections that align with those goals. Prioritize Relevance: - Focus on building relationships with individuals directly relevant to your field. - Seek connections who share similar passions or possess expertise in areas you want to explore. Quality Interactions: - Personalize messages when reaching out, highlighting why their work resonates with you. - Emphasize meaningful conversations over quantity, whether online or in person. Nurture Existing Connections: - Engage regularly with your current network, sharing updates and participating in discussions.

Online platforms are a great way to connect with others and get support and mentorship. There are Slack communities you can join, like Tech Fleet, that also allow you to work on projects to gain experience. Be mindful of how many online platforms you join, since keeping up with them can become overwhelming.

The more you practice the easier it becomes, but don't be discouraged if you still feel nervous or anxious before an event. If you have a friend or colleague that you can practice with, judgment-free, before the event it can also help. Having a place to practice your elevator pitch like speed networking, speed mentoring, or online breakout sessions are good places to start.
