How can landscape architects improve public perception of their profession?

EDIT: Pardon my misplacement & thanks for the support! I pursued landscape architecture because I wanted to help heal society's relationship with the environment. Wherever our cultural practices intersect with the physical environment is an opportunity for reciprocity between the two. Although I love the sciences, it felt important to pursue an applied field where I could use my knowledge to inform tangible environmental improvements. As a cultural landscape research assistant and designer and planner of public parks, natural playgrounds, school campuses, and resilient gardens, I have contributed to the development and management of places that foster a deeper perception and appreciation of the collective landscape and our place within it.

A profession needs a Practice Act. With that legislation there are no gray areas - like non-landscape architect owned businesses hiring a professional landscape architect to come in at the end of a project only to review and stamp drawings (ultimately taking on the liability). This type of activity is not only unethical - it erodes the profession. A 'stamp for hire' potentially puts the public at risk since a seasoned professional landscape architect may not have led the entire conceptual, design development and document preparation aspects of the project.

This lies at the heart of the question how can we improve perceptions when the majority of the public and many fellow professionals are unclear or have no knowledge of what we do or bring to our society. We are the nature positive equivalent of the Victorian Engineers who should play a central role in many of the pressing issues facing the built environment in the 21st Century We need to use all of the methods listed above to help evangelise our profession and we must be more vocal passionate and visible to ensure our voices are heard.

What's the problem? Landscape architecture is presently stuck as a mostly"transitional" thing (Joining architecture to engineering etc.), and other professions are quite keen to squeeze their product as much as possible. If they can avoid design fees for a LA that manages the spaces between other things, well that makes for a happy QS. It would be great if society put more financial value on outdoor spaces, but the same spaces are generally seen as a method of getting away from the day to day madness of business and life. I mean while there's a soothing Zen to supermarket car park design and planting beds, that sort of thing shouldn't be the backbone of the profession? Maybe I'm just a big romantic child who wants somewhere to play.

Talvez a expressão mais apropriada seja, justamente, "envolver o Público", e nem tanto "melhorar a percepção pública". Afinal de contas, creio que antes de "melhorar" uma percepção, é preciso que essa percepção (entendimento do que faz a profissão) ao menos exista! Exista no conhecimento popular, e não só elitizado. Para isso, é preciso esclarecer que Arquitetura da Paisagem abrange muito, e abrange todos, independente se falarmos de área rural, reserva ambiental, ou centro urbano: só se envolve quem se vê incluso na causa. O paisagismo deveria ser valorizado e reivindicado como direito de viver bem "da porta pra fora". Arquitetura da Paisagem diz sobre como estamos vivendo no meio ambiente, e sobre quanto tempo ainda queremos viver nele.

Acredito que antes de se conectar com o seu público, o paisagista precisa estar conectado com a sua proposta de trabalho. Nichar é a melhor estratégia, pois quando você tem propriedade do que faz, faz o que gosta e transforma ambientes, a atração dos clientes ocorre de forma natural, por identificação do que eles procuram e o que o seu trabalho transforma.

The best jobs often involve a public voice. At the very least, it involves an expert consultant speaking on behalf of a municipality: A Licensed Landscape Architect consultant for the municipality will be hyper-focused on the desires and needs of the community, more than a design LA might. But we often overlook the simple fact that these spaces are to be used by the public. So when it makes sense to do so, involving the community in the discussion will help to shape any public or semi-public space to meet their needs. As the designer, I may have some great ideas...but they won't amount to anything without community engagement. And the community may steer the design somewhere else - maybe less lavish, but more usable.

La arquitectura del paisaje todavía es una profesión aislada en España. A mi manera de entender la universidad, no existe una carrera con una titulación digna que nos diferente. Aún a día de hoy existe una alto intrusismo de otros profesionales que desarrollan un proyecto de paisajismo sin, a mi juicio, unos conocimientos globales.

Landscape Architects are the conductors of the built environment. We do not work in isolation from our allied professions that perform their work, we help the team see the vision in unison, help translate the pieces into one functional and beautiful work. It is the breadth of our training and understanding of the natural and built environments that make us Landscape Architects

My firm's name is "Beyond The POST," and the firm's philosophy embodies that landscape architects are not an isolated profession and that we need to collaborate with With the clients and our end users to understand their needs and wants; With the architects and engineers to understand their requirements, needs, and wants, such as building access, stormwater management, and underground or overhead services; With the manufacturers to understand the impacts and requirements of the products we use. After all, our choices as a team for our landscape designs significantly affect our surroundings and downstream.

It may seem obvious, but Landscape Architects are natural advocates for the environment. Some of the obvious aspects of our careers come up frequently: Stormwater management, environmental resiliency through species selection and design, etc. But there is one aspect that is often overlooked, and I feel Landscape Architects are best suited to lead the charge: Lighting Design. Energy reduction through Lighting is important, and spaces are often over-lit. We can provide safe and welcoming spaces through layers of light - a mix of area lights, pedestrian scale lighting, and small accent floods. LA's are equipped to handle the artful aspects of design with the technical details; more of us should strive to take on lighting design.

I've been a landscape architect for over thirty years, and for all thirty of those years LAs have wrung their hands over this exact same problem. Nothing has changed. So, take our marketing dollars and throw it to Hollywood. Pay studios to make characters landscape architects - a twist on product placement. Sue Booking dot com for professional defamation because a gardener, seen pruning a hedge, says to call him a landscape architect in its national ad campaign (okay, suing probably wont fly), but why not the other? Why couldn't a major TV character "work" as a landscape architect?
