How can leaders inspire their teams to achieve sustainability goals?

A shared purpose is a great starting point. I have found that asking people as they join the team what their values are, why they are here and what they wish to accomplished is a good start. Regular team sessions where the link between personal purpose, company or team purpose and impact in the world is explored are very powerful.

One thing I have found helpful is to sit with the team and look at the big picture. Often times the team members are assigned with small task and the leader/manager only sees the whole picture. This might make the team less interested/motivated. Once the whole team knows the overall impact of the project/product, then it becomes much easier for the team to work with enthusiasm. At first the task/project may seem that it would cost more money but in the long run after adding to/modifying the existing process, the whole process becomes lean, which would in turn save money.

El lider empodera, delega y guia, haciendo cada vez al equipo mas autosuficiente. Tener un proposito, que ese proposito sea en comun, y hacer que todos se sientan parte del mismo. Algo que creo funciona bien es preguntar que te gusta hacer, que no te gusta, y que te gustaria..., con el objetivo de unir objetivos personales con el proposito en comun, y generando un ambiente idoneo.

The first step to involve the team in sustainability topics, is to give them the time and resources to understand the problem space and the possible solutions offered by the industry in-depth. It is a complex issue and many quick-fix solutions can lead to green washing or sub-optimal outcomes. Team members that had enough time and were given access to experts and other resources will feel empowered to make the right decisions and take leadership towards reaching the sustainability goals of the whole company.

Lots of people wish for change, but the inertia of inaction can be tough to overcome. A great way to encourage people to stand with each other and pursue that change is to give them opportunities to find agency in their efforts. If people can work on things they are passionate about, and they can see material difference be made, it's all the more likely they'll keep at it.

Be clear about the goal, and flexible about the path. That invites the team’s creativity to be applied to strategy development.

O que fazemos na nossa empresa é comemorar objetivos importantes atingidos. One approach is by “naming and faming” people in the organization who have made a difference. Another annual award, could be presented to employees who have been nominated by other employees.

Inspiring sustainability isn't just about milestones; it's about celebrating the journey. As leaders, recognizing and rewarding our team's efforts, big and small, fosters a culture of achievement.

The biggest reward is often the genuine sense of achievement and profiling accomplishments. My previous team would often talk about the legacy they wanted to create from a job done really well, being sensitive to all stakeholders, and inspiring others through sustainable leadership.

Um líder deve agir com integridade, transparência e responsabilidade. Ser honesto e justo com seus funcionários e sempre cumprir suas promessas. Ele deve ser responsável por suas ações e estar sempre disposto a assumir a responsabilidade por seus erros. É essencial ter respeito e empatia pelos membros da sua equipe, pelas partes interessadas e pelo meio ambiente. Um líder que se preocupa com as pessoas e com o mundo ao seu redor é inspirador, seu comportamento influencia outras pessoas a repensarem seus próprios comportamentos e a superarem metas de sustentabilidade.

Más que inspirar, me inclino por utilizar la palabra "persuadir". En este sentido, algunos tips: - Conocer el contexto de negocio y comprender por donde el mercado puede estar requiriendo objetivos corporativos de sostenibilidad en el negocio - Identificar oportunidades de negocio vinculados objetivos de sostenibilidad. - No caer en la tentación de que lo comunicacional sobresalga respecto a la internalización de prácticas. - Liderar con el ejemplo. - Evitar el greenwashing desprestigian que hacen descreer en las estrategias de sostenibilidad por parte de quienes integran la organización, y provocan escepticismo entre los tomadores de decisión.

When we talk about modeling behavior, there's a difference between truly embodying the expectations of a team & just going through the motions. A team's members need to feel like they can trust each other, especially in disagreement. As a leader, avoiding conflict can lead to an artificial harmony within the group, and low results. On the other hand, not holding oneself to the same standards that you expect of your team members, and engaging in unproductive conflict, comes across as hypocritical & harms group cohesion. When you engage with your team, show them that you have its best interest at heart. Have humility, and don't be afraid to hold yourself & others accountable. If we can be vulnerable with each other, we can trust each other.

Um exemplo de um excelente líder que convivi, fazia o ambiente do cafezinho extremamente agradável e convidativo ao diálogo. Estimulava os feedbacks de seus colaboradores com leveza e muita animação. Tinha genuíno interesse em conhecer seus funcionários para identificar como poderia deixar o ambiente de trabalho estimulante para cada um. A imensa disposição e o otimismo do líder eram contagiantes e em grande parte o melhor de cada um acabava se revelando e a equipe ia ficando mais produtiva e o ambiente de trabalho, saudável. Trabalhar com bons líderes nos fazem crescer e podem ser um divisor de águas na carreira de muitas pessoas, como foi comigo!

Despite our hunger for change, we cannot change the whole world in a day. Achieving sustainability goals takes time, so the best approach is to take each effort seriously as you go, and reflect on it when it's done. Come up with a plan, and encourage each other to stick it through. It probably won't turn out perfect, but you always get to learn & try again. What matters is that you give it your all. Look at the results of your team's efforts. Don't get defeated if you don't meet your goals on the first try, but don't settle for half-measures either. Develop some criteria to assess what worked & what didn't, and make note of it for the next go round.

However, also as individual we have to contribute by cultivating our own sustainability mindset. Using strategies in our daily life such as: 1. Understanding the interconnectedness of all living things and the impact of our personal choices on the environment and society. 2. Develop Awareness and Conscious Decisions: In view of the long term impact of our actions, we need to build awareness about the link between environmental balance, social security, economic prosperity. 3. To minimise waste and maximise resource efficiency, adopt a Life-Cycle perspective: taking into account the impact of products and services on the environment from their raw material extraction to disposal.

Um exemplo que vi são associações de energias renováveis se unindo pela luta contra as mudanças climáticas. O objetivo maior, que é impulsionar a transição energética e combater o aquecimento global é o mesmo entre as diferentes associações (eólica, solar, hidrogênio, armazenamento etc). O diálogo entre elas e o trabalho em conjunto cria uma rede de apoio e um panorama macro do que se deseja alcançar. O comprometimento e a importância atribuída ao serviço aumentam quando existe aproximação de pares que lutam pelo mesmo objetivo comum por vias distintas e/ou complementares. O apoio mútuo e a visão da força representada pela união dos esforços cria mais potência na luta individual.

Sustainability progress can be very limited without considering the whole value chain - suppliers, communities, customers, partners etc. Developing skills and working with others to convene the whole system around an issue and motivate collaborative design is essential. In renewable energy, developers would need to work with manufacturers and underlying suppliers to make environmental sourcing improvements; and would need to engage social enterprise and grass roots organisations to enhance community impact. This is a practice and a long term competence, not a short term fix.

Make masks and ear plugs mandatory for the team and tell them if you are feeling odd then try by all means that your children don't need to wear them.

It's about looking at the whole picture—the suppliers we work with, the communities we're a part of, our customers, and our partners. We've got to bring everyone together for real change. We can look at it from the renewable energy perspective, for instance where it's not just about installing panels; it's about teaming up with manufacturers and suppliers for greener sourcing. And then we've got to connect with local groups too, make sure our impact on communities is positive. This isn't a quick fix—it's a skill we've got to keep honing. Sustainability is a journey that needs everyone on board, working together for the long haul.
