How can you balance creativity and structure when measuring creative work?

I'm gonna go with a Bowieism here.... I believe it's from an MTV interview in the 1990's. He was talking about the phenomenon in the 80's where he noticed young artists simply seeking to make music that would make them famous. The drive was fame not inspiration. He compared this to his own experience of, "I have something inside me, that needs to become something, and I may become famous as a result of that work." What I took away from that is if we are creating work to become popular we will not move society in positive directions. As artists, creatives, or visionaries we need to create work that is first and foremost meaningful to the self, and then it might mean something to someone else.

Measuring creative work is crucial, especially in your field of digital advertising, where the impact of creative campaigns directly correlates to client success and revenue generation. Metrics can help you understand what resonates with your audience, guiding future strategies. However, the challenge lies in quantifying inherently subjective and qualitative aspects like creativity. It's about finding the right mix of data-driven insights and creative intuition.

What sets us apart as creatives is our ability to be inventive. Consistent creative evaluation is essential for various reasons: to remain current, to question existing ideas, and to offer fresh, comprehensive solutions.

The first thing that comes to mind: Would an average person conceive of this? Does it ring a bell? Typically, the first batch of ideas may seem predictable. The real challenge starts when we play enough with the problem. It when we need to invest more time in comprehending and delving deeply into the brief to uncover innovative solutions.

To measure creative work effectively, you need clear, relevant criteria. These might include engagement metrics, conversion rates, brand recall, or even awards won.

Furthermore, a variety of online and AI tools are available to aid in quality measurement providing essential features like readability scores, headline analyzers, photo rating apps, and video feedback tools.

Once your criteria are set, data collection is next. This involves both quantitative data (like click-through rates, social media engagement) and qualitative feedback (like client satisfaction, peer reviews).

On the other hand, involving the team in the process significantly impacts the ability to maintain open collaboration and gain diverse perspectives. Many times we manage to blend ideas into one unique approach.

Consider the evolving nature of digital marketing (since I am into it), the importance of team input, and the need for continuous learning and adaptation. It's about fostering a culture where creativity and data coexist harmoniously.

Time should be your ally. Combing a 360 Degree Assessment (Self, Peer, Facilitator, Subordinate*) can be helpful using stated metrics; Miller's 6 C's or Gardner's MI's to help. There are more and more examples of the same every year it seems! In the past we have used (in education) an observational panel of 3-5 people (varied positions and roles) to assess creativity (and other subjective domains). By having the panel discuss "why" they are assessing, and "what" leads us to the "how."
