Boundary setting is one of the critical things when it comes to freelancing. You need to be very clear of what you can do and what you wouldn’t do. You mustn’t cross the boundary even if you feel like you might loose a client, since if you do you might be putting yourself at risk of being taken advantage of! Additionally, be very realistic about deadlines and communicate everything early and clearly to the client. It’s best to keep everything in writing, since people can misinterpret information. Whilst written information wouldn’t change and can be referred back to. When it comes to long term projects, I suggest trying to split those up to make it easier for tracking purposes but also if there are issues impact will be a lot smaller.

One thing to remember is as a freelancer you have limited time in a week and even less time that you can spend on project work. So it’s worth being very realistic about when you can do project work and sticking to those slots. Additionally, it’s worth splitting projects into smaller chunk to reduce project management burden. But also to possibly tie that to billing so that you can get paid quicker, in increments, before whole project is finished.
