How can you become a ROS specialist?

I think the best way to learn ROS is simply to try to start a hobby project in Robotics. Then decide you are going to use ROS for that project. And then start learning ROS so that you can complete your hobby project. It's a double win 1. You have a successful project you are passionate about 2. You learned ROS by doing, and you have the proof!

Becoming a ROS specialist offers a challenging, rewarding path. Here's a brief guide: Foundations: 1- Grasp Linux basics, and master its commands, structure, and tools. 2- Learn Python and C++. Basic Robotics: Learn key concepts: robotic systems, perception, planning, kinematics, dynamics, and control. ROS: 1- Docs: Start with ROS Wiki. 2- Courses: Online platforms offers good starting point like the Construct, Udemy, and others. 3- Books: Many are available. Practice: Engage in projects and explore GitHub repos related to ROS. Stay Updated: Follow ROS Discourse, attend events like ROSCon. Advanced: Research Papers. Specialize: Manipulation (MoveIt!), Navigation Stack, Driver Development, Drones, ...,etc Happy journey into ROS.

I firmly believe that hands-on, experimental learning is the most effective way to acquire knowledge. Best way to start is by installing ROS. watching some tutorials, or even some Linkedin courses, and doing the homework. Next I'd recommend some personal projects and then getting into the trenches with some freelancing work!

I started with ROS for a research project in my undergrad. Having barely any CS experience (just a little C++ and Python), I just dove into the ROS wiki and downloaded the most supported package at that time (ROS Indigo). From there, I followed the roswiki tutorials of setting up a publisher and subscriber, trying to understand how the communication service worked. I also familiarized myself with all the cool tools ROS gives, like rqt_graph for visualizing node connections, as well as Rviz for visualizing URDF models.

To master advanced topics in ROS like tf, URDF, RViz, Gazebo, MoveIt, navigation, perception, and machine learning, you can first start with documentation and tutorials online, build your first projects, engage in ROS communities and try googling your errors, and then maybe consider taking some specialized courses.

ROS competitions like ROS Industrial Challenge, the NASA Space Robotics Challenge, the DARPA Subterranean Challenge, or the RoboCup are all amazing, but we also recommend doing an internship in a startup or company focusing on your favorite ROS topics, as this can also help you land a position that will fit your future career path!
