How can you benefit from lifelong learning in computer science?

After looking and experiencing the CS academics and industry in different perspectives across domains, I can certainly assert that "committing to lifelong learning" is the only way to survive, especially it can assure you to never be scared of layoffs etc. When I say "lifelong learning", I do not mean to learn different technologies and languages etc, I mean to learn and understand the core of technologies, how they are built which are usually based on core CS principles. Such learning basically lets us learn any new technology or subject of interest with proper intuition, which is the key.

Lifelong learning is very important to stay relevant in software industry. Every other day a new framework or technology takes the spot light and only learning or understanding those new technologies will only help us to make the right choices and decisions.

This industry of Computer Science is really vast and expanding exponetially in the past years. So if you are someone who is having a keen interest in tech and you are having a mindset of solving problems, then trust me it will be a best choice for you to be a part of this industry.

You cannot survive in the industry if you are not a life long learner. I am 70 and I am still teaching Computer Science and IT in an International School. I have been teaching for the last 36+ years. Without learning continuously, it is impossible for me to survive as an IT educator. It is actually true even for any other field. Life long learning is a must for all of us these days with things changing constantly around us, rather evolving exponentially around us.

It is often said that your "net worth is your network". When you learn and expand your horizons you get a chance to get to learn from new people and this increases your network and in turn your network.

The exchange of experiences and sharing of knowledge is what the globalized world allows us. Not so long ago, to learn new content, you had to buy expensive and very heavy books and carry them under your arm. Today, in just a few minutes we can share knowledge and help a colleague who could be your boss tomorrow. Never know!

There's a popular saying that "learn more, earn more" which means adding to your knowledge base increases your chances of earning a bigger opportunity to earn a bigger income. As a professional you must commit to lifelong learning through any means possible. I found reading books as the best to broaden your professional and constantly building something from the knowledge gained from reading.

In my opinion, it works both ways: you need to enhance your network to stay informed, and to be able to follow other professional and experts, and be able to ask questions. "Know it all" won't work for a myriad of reasons, but keeping trusted connections with people from whom you can learn is priceless.

Engaging your brain in additional learning has shown ties to helping avoid dementia and Alzheimer's, as well as boosting general happiness!

It is said that the brain awakens in the new and when we learn a new language the brain has to create new neural pathways if this is not the brain loses its capabilities. So always be willing and enthusiastic to learn.

The brain as part of our body that needs stimulation to continue working, everyone knows this... but discovering the pleasure in exercising the brain is the key! What a pleasure it is to know that we learned something new, right?

IT Engineers work mostly with our brains and like any athlete with its body, it's in good advice to take care of it. Read books, do crosswords, have a side hobby not aligned with the main job, do some exercise while listening a podcast... and above all get well and necessary rest.

Some of the most fun exercises I've done were micro credentials in areas I didn't have skills in! Go wild! Develop your core skills, but also branch out.!

Indeed, if you work in an area you're passionate about and believe it has interesting potential and purpose,it helps with your personal and professional development. I see many people choosing technology solely for monetary reasons, but money alone isn't enough to stay at the top. Technology demands continuous updating, creativity, knowledge of other technologies beyond your field for potential future associations, market insight, business acumen, and an understanding of contemporary politics. All of these factors influence your decision-making.

It is not an obligation or something to do because the market asks for it. Those who discover the pleasure of learning have fun with the journey, which is much more important than the final destination.

Having a good time while working can be challenging. Yes, we can do our best to focus on the good side, but that's not always possible. Find some micro-projects that involves something you love or some learning challenge, keep them small and diverse to always have something thrilling to back off when need a small brain break.

A lot of fun you can have if you join a global family of 'hams' (radio amateurs) who are practicing computer-related 'data' modes of wireless communication.

Just do it. Small and incremental. There are almost no rules. You can start with tutorials, reading blogs, join discussions, collaborate on open source projects or - one of my preferred actions - connect with other people that are on the same journey.

The best way to learn is to start small and then experiment with the basic tutorials. Make mistakes and blow up repeatedly. The more you make mistakes the better you get at it.

Don't hold back - take the leap and give it a shot! Believe it or not, your tendency to be lazy could actually work to your advantage. Take some time to explore various approaches to tackling the same challenge.

Offer free seminars and talks about topics you have already mastered. Lectures can be done at local clubs, schools, domestic or international conferences, ... In any case, share your knowledge with others.

Go to the vendor websites of products you're interested in. Most of them have some training materials available. Otherwise, look for courses or courseware that might help. Have a look at Open Courseware - EdX with MIT and Harvard has some outstanding content which can be taken for free!

When i was younger i wrote an article about how was the start of my career, i think its all about how much you want "that" for you, when you want it so bad, you'll be doing this thing all the time, you'll be thinking about it all the time, you will have difficulty doing other things, because you will start to think that other things are a waste of time. Today in my career i see this as something beneficial for me and for my skills.

Be curious! Ask yourself why things are how they are, try to look behind the curtain and understand the inner workings of things that feel like magic. In my opinion, this is how you build knowledge in a fun way.
