How can you build professional relationships with less experienced colleagues?

Not only showing interest, but providing clear roadmap on how the relationship can be beneficial for their growth. Less experienced people tend to listen to anyone available to share, but not all shares will lead you somewhere. Clarity is important.

In my many years of work experience what i have found to be one of the easiest ways to build professional relationships with less experienced colleagues is to show genuine interest in them as individuals, not just as workers. Ask them about their background, their goals, their challenges, and their passions. Listen attentively and empathetically, and avoid judging or predicting level of performance. Be specific and clear when assigning them tasks making sure tasks are broken down for them and just confirm that they understand

Showing genuine interest makes the other person feel seen and open up without the fear of being judged. When people see that you are genuinely interested in their growth they are more open minded to constructive feedback. This is the kind of feedback that helps in mentorship and growth.

Foster open communication, offer support and guidance, and recognize and appreciate their contributions. Actively listen to their ideas, provide constructive feedback, and create opportunities for collaboration. Demonstrating approachability and willingness to share your expertise can contribute to building positive professional relationships.

To build relationships by sharing expertise with less experienced colleagues, I include them in my team while offering support and mentorship as we navigate the assignment together and also provide constructive feedback. Sharing skills and knowledge is part of the day to day. Remember to help them recognise successes and wins whether big or small. Helping celebrate the small wins is important in building confidence

Professional relationships are better built with younger colleagues when we give them platforms to express themselves with proper technic in place to guide them through their task. Through proper passage of knowledge we also gain more confidence in our field. Truth is, you have nothing to lose when you pass knowledge unto others, particularly your younger colleagues.

When, I was mentoring those, I had to train, I was helpful and didn't allow my 🦚 to disseminate them, or level down their expertise. We are all part of a team, and need each other's to make the company complete its mission statement.

Embrace 'reverse mentoring.' They may be less experienced, but they still have expertise. Your relationship can be a space for them find their voice and effective ways to share their ideas and feedback to their own team. Whether it's offering fresh perspectives on the culture, leadership, or challenging status quo thinking, providing them the opportunity to 'mentor back' can boost their confidence and make them feel valued.

In most of the cases, they can came with a new or different approach than you are used to do it. Even if they are novice, it always helps to understand what are their strengths and to propose tasks where they can "shine".

Seeking their input and making sure that their ideas aren’t shot down is important. They often have great ideas but don’t always feel too confident to share. It is therefore important to engage them more and publicly acknowledge their ideas so as to build confidence in themselves and promote critical thinking. In regards to feedback, its important to make sure you create a safe and positive environment for them to freely give feedback without fear of backlash.

Listen Actively: Take the time to actively listen to their ideas, questions, and concerns. Demonstrating genuine interest in their opinions fosters trust and shows that you value their contributions. Actively listening also allows you to better understand their perspective.

Seeking their input is just as important in building trust and connection as this shows you listen and value their opinion. If you don’t quite agree with their inputs, you can use the sandwich method and deliver your side of the story.

I enjoy coaching and mentoring with less experience colleagues. I often set 1:1 meeting with them to actively listen to their challenges both in work and life. Then recommend the resources that they can self study. Motivate them to believe in theirself And co-create the solutions with them

This can also be done by encouraging them to take on new challenges and providing them with the support needed. Knowing their career aspirations and supporting them through networking is also an important way of supporting their growth

Serving as a mentor and/or a sponsor for less experienced colleagues is a great way to support their growth. Mentor by giving effective, positive, relevant and actionable feedback and sponsor them by using your influence to assist them with gaining access to opportunities that they otherwise might not be able to obtain.

Provide Constructive Feedback: Offer constructive feedback in a positive and encouraging manner. Point out their strengths and areas for improvement, emphasizing personal and professional growth. Constructive feedback helps them develop their skills and builds a foundation for improvement.

There are many ways we can support them in their growth, such as by helping them connect with the material which can help them shape small goals. We can also ask them to join some webinars where they can understand and learn things which they are not aware of.

It’s important to honor the work life balance in the workplace. Acknowledge that people have a life outside the office and making sure that you dont invade into their personal time. This is healthy and reduces burnout. Its also important to adapt to their work and communication style so that they perform better.

Include Them in Projects: Involve less experienced colleagues in projects to give them hands-on experience. This not only helps them grow professionally but also integrates them into the team, fostering a sense of belonging. Provide opportunities for them to showcase their skills and contribute to the team's success.

Being your authentic self also brings out the best out of you. Trust in what you can deliver. It will build that connection and the relationship will flourish.

Anyone will love if we are honest with them and are ready to guide them in terms of anything wrong which they have done. This way they will have more trust on us and we can help them carve out into a strong individual. We can also help them enjoy their small success which can help us create a great bonding among us.

Share Networking Opportunities: Introduce them to your professional network and include them in relevant networking events. This exposure can help them expand their connections, gain valuable insights, and learn from others in the industry. Networking is a crucial aspect of professional development.

The most important thing is to listen them to understand not only to listen. When you really listen them you can see both what they know, what they do not know and how you can help them or how you can get help from them. Communication is two way road.

Empower them - responsibility brings belief & faith in their own abilities to perform & grow. Be “them” more than being “you” - be in their shoes to understand challenges. Career Aspirations alignment - understand if their current role is aligned to their long term goals and how you can contribute to bring them up to speed.

Wer sich Zeit nimmt und Interesse am Gegenüber zeigt, wird auf Kompetenzen treffen, die im beruflichen Kontext weniger oder gar nicht gezeigt werden, die aber einen deutlichen Mehrwert bieten.
