How can you choose between data analyst, engineer, or scientist?

There is little consensus on these definitions, but each organization has to decide how to divide up the workload and determine whose desk a task will land on. So it is crucial for each organization to sort this out. My two cents: The difference between a data scientist and a data analyst is that the data scientist uses past data, inference, and modeling to predict the future, and the data analyst focuses mostly on trying to accurately describe the present tense. (Business Intelligence tasks, among others) Engineers focus on the "bookends" of the process both before modeling (data engineering) and deployment (ML Ops). Data Scientists will perform best when they can focus on model development of active projects.

I think for the data analyst its must to have programming skills like python so first they can clean and prepare the data well. Because preparing data is very important before getting any useful insights. After data preparation, we can use any tool like Tableau, MS excel or Power BI. It would be even more good if a data analyst know matplotlib, plotly and seaborn so they can even play with more flexibility!

In general, a data analyst will be in charge of 1) translating a domain question into a data problem, 2) solving the data problem applying the best tools and methodologies, and 3) translating the problem answer into conclusions tailored to their stakeholders. For instance, for a question in e-commerce domain: "What was the most profitable product of an e-commerce store during last month?", a data analyst would: 1) Identify the data to be analyzed in order to measure profitability at the product level 2) Use the most suitable tools and data sources to measure profitability at product level, and identify that one with the highest 3) Explain the result obtained, adjusting the level of detail to the audience that will receive the information

Choosing between a career as a data analyst, data engineer, or data scientist depends on your skills, interests, and career goals. Ultimately, the right choice depends on your individual strengths, interests, and the type of impact you want to have in the field of data. A data Analyst is someone who starts out the data pre-processing by cleaning the data & afterwards; process & analyze the already cleaned data to get insights. then interprets the output inform of visualization or table to the board or stakeholders or the end users inform of a Report. For example working for a retail store there are lots of insights that can be gotten from the store data such as the highest selling region, highest selling station nationwide and furthermore a deep dive could reveal the highest selling product in each of these stations to know what to focus more on while restocking& what not. Excel & SQL are important skill for data analyst likewise Tableau or Power BI & moreso a presentation skill too is needed for reporting

Vaguely true but isn’t well described in my opinion. Data engineering is really about setting up secure and reliable connections to datasources (SQL, flat files, unstructured, images, etc) and making them available to other analysts or data scientists. Data engineers may do some transformation and cleaning probably with SQL or Spark but that could also be shared with a data scientist. A data engineer should have a strong understanding of data normalization, database design and drivers/connections, and APIs for data streamed from the web.

Data engineering now is not the same as 3 years ago, and its changing still. Alot of modern tooling has drastically reduced the need to build custom solutions to every problem, which means that data engineers are now being pulled into more analytical work, with a larger focus on business value - and this is a good thing! Alongside this, I'm seeing many more "blended" roles - setting up data infra for a smaller company is often stitching together SaaS platforms and pointing them at a data warehouse. This shift allows much smaller data teams, where engineers are expected to also work on analytical tasks as complex infra work is now abstracted away. This changes with company scale and complexity - like with everything, context matters.

Specifically, I would like my data engineer to be familiar with ETL tools like Apache Spark, Apache NiFi, Talend, or Informatica for designing and implementing data pipelines. She/He has expertise in integrating data from various sources, including APIs, databases, and third-party services. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to data pipelines, processing, and infrastructure. Knowledge of data modeling concepts and tools for designing efficient and effective data schemas.

A data engineer is the architect behind the data castle. They wield Python, Java, Spark, Hadoop, and AWS like master builders, crafting the infrastructure for data journeys. Their work ensures data's safe passage, reliability, and scalability. Collaboration with data analysts and scientists ensures the data's purity and accessibility. Programming prowess and engineering acumen are their cornerstones. They're masters of data architecture, constructing fortresses against chaos. Their domain is the realm of large, complex, unstructured data. While data scientists analyze, data engineers fortify, creating the foundation for data's triumphant transformation.

Selecting a Data Engineering role is ideal for individuals who are inclined towards the architectural aspects of data, such as building and maintaining robust data pipelines and infrastructure. This path suits those who enjoy the process of managing large datasets and are proficient in programming, database management, and system architecture. If you find satisfaction in creating the foundational structures that enable data storage, processing, and accessibility, and are interested in the technical challenges of data scalability and retrieval, a Data Engineer role aligns with your strengths and interests.

Becoming a proficient data scientist involves honing essential soft skills these days. Firstly, cultivate a deep sense of curiosity. Approach data with a relentless desire to uncover patterns and insights. This curiosity fuels your motivation to explore and discover. Patience is another crucial soft skill. Data analysis can be time-consuming, and sometimes answers aren't immediately apparent. Patience helps you persevere through complex problems without getting discouraged. Effective communication is vital. Translate your data-driven findings into meaningful insights that non-technical stakeholders can understand. Storytelling skills allow you to craft narratives that make your data compelling and actionable.

To be a good data scientist, you need to be really good at math, know how to use computers, and understand the area you're working in. You don't need to be a computer expert, but you should know how to play with data and make it work for you. And remember, the data they work with can be messy and always changing, so being flexible is important too!

Don't worry about job titles. Dive into a hands-on projects with real data. Pick a topic you're passionate about and find publicly available data to play with. e.g. Scrape employment data from a public careers site. If you're already part of a company with well-established teams, data engineering can be a great starting point. It lays the groundwork for data analysis and data science work to build on top of. I find that it is much easier to transition to data analysis or data science this way. The main thing is don't "over-plan" - focus on doing. Dive in, try things out, and don't be afraid to fail. Discovering what works and what doesn't through hands-on experience is the fastest way to find the right data role for you!

Career paths diverge for these professionals. Even these terms are still a bit vague, generally speaking, I think 'Data Analyst' role is the basis for being a data engineer or data scientist. (You can check out Datacamp's Data Analyst and Data Scientist tracks for details) I cannot even imagine a data scientist or engineer without good data analyst skills. So, you can start with data analysis and if you like it and want to go deeper on data business, then; - If you want to work on building professional data structures, databases and maintaining them in good shape and healthy, then you can go with Data Engineer. - If you want to focus more on data mining, machine learning, going deeper in statistics and math behind these, and finally create algorithms, then Data Science is the way.

Primary thing in choosing what to become depends entirely on the skill set we already have.But,that is one part and the other thing is to consider the core interests you have.Whether it’s transforming the data or playing with the data to get results. Once you understand your interests not depending on the skill it’s not a big deal to learn the tech stack needed. To simply rephrase it depends on where your interest lies.

This is what I think you need for each role. For data analyst/ data engineering/data scientist the basic is to start learning SQL and then python Data Analyst - SQL, Python, Tableau /PowerBI, these will help you to analyse the data and showcase that in a dashboard Data engineering - It all starts from an ETL engineer, but in terms of data engineering you will pull data not only from the database, you will also use a big data platform and cloud as well , also you might need basic understanding of pyspark or databricks apart from traditional etl tools. Data scientist - Statistics, Python, Ml & NLP, tableau/PowerBI and also basic understanding of cloud platforms and MLOPs as well.

Once you figure out your ideal role, start learning the necessary skills and tools for the job market. Utilize online courses and tailored resources, engage in practical projects with real data, and connect with professionals in the field through online communities. Keep track of your learning progress, practice regularly, and consider building a portfolio showcasing your projects. Start with getting Data Analyst skills first including learning "Advanced Excel", "Python or R", data visualisation and "SQL". This will teach you about data analysis, programming and database structures. When you get familiar with those,it will be much easier to choose if you want to be a Data Engineer or Data Scientist or just stay as Analyst and go more experienced on diferent analysis and visualization tools. Because there is also another technical path for an analyst which goes as "BI Developer" with Power BI, Tableau, R Shiny, QlikSense etc. Also, you can go positions like "Product Manager" or technical integration roles and be more on project management instead of technical. But first things first! Be a good data analyst as a start!

Data Analyst: Data detectives who dig into data to find clues. They make data easy to understand with charts and graphs. Data Engineer: Data plumbers who build pipelines to transport data. They like to make sure data flows smoothly. Data Scientist: Data wizards who use magic (math and computers) to predict the future and solve tricky problems.

The roles sometimes need to be more well-defined in organizations. I would suggest that folks should read the job description and understand the day-in and day-out from a person who is already in that targeted role. Once they have the information, they will be able to decide if the role aligns with their career trajectory.

Let me break down the choosing process a lil simpler: 1. Data Scientist: You enjoy some programming, business knowledge and talking to clients, all in 1 job with a lot of ownership. 2. Data Analyst: You do not enjoy coding but love finding meaningful sense of Data and communication with clients is your forté. 3. Data Engineer: You enjoy coding like a Software Engineer. You do not like to work on the forefront with the customers, but you enjoy working with data. All roles in Data world are very interchangable, but knowing your interests and strength goes a long way 💡

The titles themselves often have little distinction in many companies - people with titles of data scientist often work the gamut from statistician to data engineer to data analyst to visualization expert. It is critical to get experience with real-world projects to better understand what exactly you enjoy (and perhaps what you are good at). I am a fan of the concept of Ikigai - the intersection of what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for...see how it applies to your life.

Also remember, there’s a lot of overlap between these roles at most companies. The engineer will be asked to build a visualization, the scientist might build their own pipelines. There’s no clear defined line because all three positions fall under data analytics.
