Well from experience collaborating with other photographers can be a mixed bag and it isn't as straightforward as just being good at what you do in order to get noticed. The other photographer(s) needs to want to promote you, you get noticed when you are talked about, and if the other photographer(s) doesn't want to promote you and is himself trying to use your audience there won't be any new work coming. Why would another photographer promote you over them? Whilst you learn a lot about photography and new ideas, this isn't a good way to get new clients, but at least you are creating a big portfolio of work, which in itself is helpful in securing future clients, because you can at least say I've shot this before.

When it comes to collaboration between photographers it needs to have a purpose. Collaboration only for cross promotion, visibility or fame is a bit pointless from my point of view. What you need is a "Why" a story to tell and even better find a complementary approach with different styles, techniques, skills, that will help you to grow in the end and makes the collaboration stands out from a simple cross over.

I would suggest being comfortable with putting yourself out there. In a world of social media, we sometimes overlook the power of in person networking. Most cities have networking consortiums, meet and greets, as well as industry specific connections. I'd even go so far as to research a photographer whose work you admire and reach directly.

Finding other photographers to collaborate with can be done through just regular networking while you're shooting either paid or free shoots, this just happens naturally, a lot of paid shoots often have second shooters as there are a lot of people to shoot at weddings for example, or you just need someone to watch your stuff as it can get stolen. I've found second shooters through other other photographer friends, or just browsing london photos on flickr, model mayhem, local social media groups, find someone that shoots in a style you don't or knows lighting in a way you don't and meet up.

One thing I love about photography is that it's a very wide field. You can work with a range of people, from make up artists to fashion designers and more. Through that, these people you work with everyday could be and will be in touch with other photographers who's work you might like and also end up working with.

It is important to have an honest and good connection with your partners in order to produce the best work, and enjoy each moment as you do so. Good communication is a must have, and comes with its advantages. For example: good communication can help with (finding and working with) your potential clients, as they will see how well you work together and feel at ease during their sessions. Possibly the most underrated part to collaboration is the clear outlines of each photographer’s role. Without defined roles, there’s bound to be conflict and a holdback to the development of the working relationship. For example, when shooting a wedding, each photographer should lay out his/her strengths, to best capture the important moments. One photographer focuses on bride and the other on the groom. One focuses on individual portraits and the other on group shots. Thus, no misunderstandings because communication is at the forefront.

Be very respectful of what they do and what their process is. If they work early in the morning or golden hour, make sure you adhere to that. Really get to experience how it is they do what they do. Exchange new ideas and or equipment as well. Challenge them uniquely, ask questions because you're there to learn as much as you can.

Once you get a collaborative project done, you now have access to their audience as much they have access to yours. First of all, from my experience and those of fellow photographers, this is a competitive space. Collabs don't come easily or without an agenda. Second, collabs in photography work as a win-win when the domains are different. For example, one is efficient in portraits, another with say products. And, when those two come together, they can pull off things that an individual might not. But, again, it's subjective.

What kind of photography are you doing? Choose your company carefully. Circulate with the best in your chosen field so you are moving in the right crowd. What else do your ideal clients shop for and isn’t that who you should be befriending. Aren’t they the ones that can introduce you to potential new clients?
