You can mint directly on Ethereum mainnet or Layer 2 tech build on it – those are Base, Optimism, Polygon and others. Currently I'd use Optimism or Base for any art mints. L2s are almost without expensive gas fees, so it's much cheaper. You can mint on mainnet or these L2s on Manifold.xyz easily, just select your network in the top bar. When you want to mint your first NFT, you have to create a collection – name it as you wish, but so it works in future too – for example 1/1 art, or limited editions. If you mint on your own contract on Manifold, you can take your NFTs where you want and sell them there – OpenSea, Foundation, Makersplace... But if you mint directly on marketplace, it can use so called soft-mint, where the NFT is not physically created on blockchain when you create it, but is minted when purchased. So you can't take it anywhere else and sell it there, because it doesn't exist as NFT.

That means something other than Ethereum Mainnet may work better for you; instead, check out chains like SEI, Solana, or Polygon (L2 on Eth). If you are focusing on a broader audience, you should also consider Layer 2s or even Solana over the Ethereum mainnet. The process is the same, but it will be much cheaper for users to mint/trade your NFTs.

Having even minimal coding skills it's pretty easy to deploy your own ERC721 or ERC1155 (both stand for NFTs) smart contract, as the standards are mature and easy to implement using solidity language. You gain much more control on your NFTs by having your own smart contract vs just using 3rd party platforms. Having your own smart contract will allow you to enable pretty much any additional features for your NFTs, including but not limited to whitelists, custom pricing options, unveils, dynamic data and behaviors based on some external actions, etc.
