How can you create a positive work environment for your team?

Without a positive environment, you will not get the results the company, team, or group is aiming for in the long run.

Periodic group meetings are one of the effective way of communication. Such meetings help in passing on the pertinent message to all team members but also clarify their doubts. One also get to know the undercurrents in the team.

Communication is essential when building a coherent team that trusts you and can rely on you to be honest, transparent and open. Successful teams communicate openly and effectively. This fosters an environment where ideas can flourish, and teams work together on personal goals and towards the overall vision and targets set. As a leader, ultimately, you seek to motivate and empower your team while ensuring you exercise empathy and understand individual team member needs. These ensure both performance and effective relationship building.

I believe EMPOWERING the team and keep guiding and challenging them is one of the biggest assets one can put in place to create a positive working environment for a team

Target/Project requirements should be clearly explained to the team in order to be able to produce results. Managers is imperative to be able to explain and give answers. Many leaders they just throw the project without explanation just because they lack of knowledge. Listen to the ideas/concerns of the team. Team members should be able to contribute equally in a project and share any updates and be unbiased. Sometimes, there is a short deadline, therefore all the team should be able to communicate clearly and to the point, thus it would be helpful to distribute the task to each person in advance based on their strengths to have the positive results.

Training and developing your team as part of your leadership strategy is essential. Make a conscious effort to understand your team, what motivates them, what challenges they face individually and how you can help resolve these. Research shows that while money motivates employees, they will eventually leave if they feel they can't progress or the company they work for doesn't invest in their development and training. Utilise your coaching and 1-2-1 sessions to understand deep motivations and devise action plans accordingly. The same applies to you as a leader, where you are looking to progress and develop further.

In my experience it is important to make every team member feel that every contribution that they make however small it could be is worth. Team members should feel that their efforts are making difference. There has to be a relationship of trust and recognition. The team culture should be based on honesty and mutual respect. Give everyone an opportunity to grow and make sure their opinion is heard .

Consistent training and development of the team can boost a healthy work environment and the enhance the client's experience.A personal development of each member of the team individually based on what he/she prefers, is in need from the very first 2-3 months of joining, but also develop areas that requires improvement. Trainings could be offered either with interactive workshops, practices or even trips to different sites of the company. Another important factor is the direct manager of the team to be aware of the scope and target of the team to be able to support and help the development. Managers should not be biased and favour their "people" only for a development.

Having training opportunities at work are so crucial to be able to do your job properly, as it provides confidence. It keeps you strong, knowing that you are doing your job properly and helps you to grow even faster, compared to when one is not provided training and struggles to do their job. In all my roles where i have had proper training, I found myself to be more confident and I was able to complete my tasks more efficiently. In roles where I did not have proper training or any training at all, I did find myself struggling. Especially when you don't see any development opportunities either, it really does not motivate you to put your best foot forward. However, when you know that there are opportunities to grow, it boosts motivation!

Training is imperative, not just to the success of your team but for fostering the ongoing relationships with your customers. Companies willing to make space in their budget for training - well their success speaks for itself. Taking the initiative to speak up about gaps that you notice and solutions of filling them also highlights willingness to take initiative and care regarding your team’s overall growth.

Recognition, praise and rewards come in many forms. These can be financial incentives, bonus schemes, public praise or deeper recognition offered during 1-2-1 sessions. Recognition does wonders for team morale and motivation. It's important for your staff to feel motivated and that their efforts are appreciated. However, please don't make this a box-ticking exercise and dish it out wisely to maintain the positive impact you are looking for. We are hardwired to enjoy praise; however, each individual reacts differently. Some team members may become uncomfortable if this is done publicly, so try and understand what works best for your team members first.

In my current role, I'm lucky to have team leaders that constantly praise our work and show other staff members appreciation. It motivates us and makes us go the extra mile to do our best work. We have a very team based work environment and I believe verbal praise from our team leaders really makes us work even better together as a team as we are all being recognized for our hard work.

All teams in a company has its own official and unofficial structure. The more both are aligned the higher is the team output.

Teamwork and collaboration aren't limited by the roles and responsibilities given by an organisation. Team-building is one of the essential traits a leader needs to have to ensure the team work seamlessly and effectively. To promote teamwork and collaboration, devise outside-of-the-box thinking where you can encourage team-building activities and social events and make team members "champions" of a topic for the week/month (i.e., quality monitoring, prospecting, sales coaching). This helps provide additional skills and development while ensuring the team work together and helps each other. There are tons of resources online about team-building exercises, where these can be gamified, fun and light.

Further additions to the list and previous contributions include: 1- Remind your staff throughout the day that taking short breaks is important to get up, walk about, and make this a priority. 2- Encourage exercise throughout the day; consider getting standing or treadmill workstations. 3- If your budget allows, you can think about providing wellness programmes like yoga and meditation to improve people's overall health. 4- Promote health programs, book an on-site nutritionist, or healthy snack options through a delivery service, etc.

A healthy and comfortable workspace is so crucial. For example if one is working in retail, having a proper break room is so important as it is the one place the staff member can rest. Having it clean, spacious, and comfortable is important to make the team feel like they are actually on break. Access to proper seating, snacks, drinks, the bathroom, and some extras are able to change up the atmosphere of a workspace and make team members feel more positive. For example, in my current retail role, the break room has a vending machine, a coffee machine (although it's broken), a tv, 2 bathrooms, a table and chairs, and lockers for our things. This made me feel really comfortable as I have access to all essentials!

Work life balance is #1 for me in any role I have. I feel that this is what keeps us mentally and physically healthy. Work life balance is so important so that we are able to perform properly at work without sacrificing our personal lives. We all have our own personal lives outside of work including relationships, exercise, our own hobbies, families, etc. And we shouldn't have to sacrifice any of these just for our work lives. Personally, I really love the hybrid model that has been more popular post covid. I think that this really helps improve work life balance for many. It lets us live our own lives while boosting performance at work!

Creating a positive work environment involves a holistic approach. In addition to open communication, collaboration, and appreciation, flexibility, recognition, conflict resolution, professional development, wellness programs, transparency, inclusivity, a feedback culture, engagement and fun activities play crucial roles. These elements together form a cohesive strategy that not only fosters teamwork and innovation but also supports individual growth and well-being, ultimately shaping a workplace where everyone thrives and finds a sense of purpose and belonging.
