Go into the design process by clearly sharing what is the metric we want to move with the design team for the specific feature/product in context. 3. Try to clarify and get aligned if the feature you are designing are more inclined to "business need" or "user need". Sometimes there will be conflict during design the process and having this clarity will make decision making easier.

You can identify 'Must Haves' and 'Should Haves' for both - users as well as business. The ones that are overlapping or the ones that complement each other are your go-to-features. These features will help you grow as a business. A simple example could around subscription cancellation. A company would never want a user to cancel the subscription; whereas, a user may want to cancel the subscription for multiple reasons. The companies tend to not provide the best user experience when it comes to subscription cancellation. Here company's objectives take a precedence over user expectations.

"Focus on the user, everything else will follow" It may seems naive, but prioritization of business over users is often detrimental to rentention and long-term value. So before compromising, consider the need for a trade-off may be the consequence of: - Tactical error, i.e. an experience design issue: what can be altered in the user journey to improve business results without compromising the user experience? Is a trade-off the only way to reconcile both? - Strategic challenge: was the right business model adopted? Is there a way to change the monetization mechanism to align users and business incentives? In some cases, you'll have confirmation you actually need a trade-off, but in many, you'll uncover a mutually beneficial solution.

The way to do it is to identify what changes when you improve things for customers - an observable change - which is the result of your solution hypothesis (if we build {this thing}, it will address {this need} resulting in {this observable change}. Then you have an outcome hypothesis (if we cause {this observable change} it will lead to an {outcome} which benefits the business because {reasons}). The combination of solution hypothesis and outcome hypothesis allows you to evaluate when you are considering work which benefit both the business and the customer, or only one or neither.
