Typically, the technician will give the area that is of interest a brief overview and collect the soil a few inches below the surface. Soil samples should be collected from several areas that have similar in colors and textures and mixed together. A subsample is taken out of the mixed soil that has been collected and is used for the determination of the pH. Normally you want the soil sample to be dry. There are pH probes that can also be used that are quick and simple. The challenge is getting enough sample points to determine the nominal pH of the area of interest.

I used sulfur for lowering pH before. The mix I used was 90% free sulfur. It worked for blueberries pretty well as well as bearberries. Be aware that this will take time. The mixture I used needed 6-8 weeks to complete its work. It is important to be aware of the time the medium needs to show results. Otherwise you easily can overuse it and make the soil too acid for your needs.
