How can you develop a global perspective using your bilingual skills?

As a Bilingual and biliterate individual I have the opportunity to participate in the global community in more ways, get information from more places, and learn more about people from other cultures. Not only are you more marketable but you are more attuned and aware of cultural differences

Look for books and website that detail expert opinions on how different cultures are different and similar to each other. You can stimulate interesting and informative conversation by asking people if they agree with expert’s opinions about these cultural differences. Always keep in mind that if you understand what someone is saying to in another language, you may not really understanding what they are saying because of cultural difference. Some cultures avoid saying no to a request, for example, by saying maybe or later to a request.

In my experience, I’ve been able to assist in a very diverse manner. Always willing to help and contribute to what’s going to get it done.

Understanding a culture not just requires history and values of that culture but being in the environment as well. Nuances can be discussed but experiencing it will be completely different then anything you can read or teach yourself. I always believe in asking your colleagues and mentors for advice and feedback because they will have experiences different then yours to provide a perspective you may not have considered.

Speaking more than one language really boosted my career in my 20s, opening up fantastic opportunities to work abroad and meet people from different backgrounds from all over the world. UK employers rarely encourage, value or compensate their bilingual employees but don't let that put you off learning another language! Practising that language and travelling can still open up opportunities and the personal enrichment is just as valuable. I'm currently learning my 5th foreign language -no work/salary incentive, just pure curiosity and brain stimulation.

Making mistakes is a part of life. No matter where you are in life you make mistakes. Being a bilingual speaker, you can use online apps and a dilect coach depending on what you want to learn and how deep your interest level is. Learning a new language after a certain age is a challenge but not impossible and thats the most important thing to remember.

In my experience, I really enjoy using both my native language Spanish and my second language English. I took a vow at a very young age to always use both of the above mentioned languages. To help whom ever needed help in translation.
