One of the most important ideas is to get all the information first. Try to understand the context, what's happened, and the perspective of the individuals involved. When possible get the perspective of informed individuals that are not directly involved in the conflict. There more you have a complete and unbiased understanding of the nature of the conflict, the more effective you'll be at mediating the conflict.

Listening to the person next to you is the best way to create empathy for what that person might be feeling. It will give you clues of why the misunderstanding started in the first place.
