Competent operators are expected to always follow the traffic rules set by the organisation which should be in like with the world standard safe operation.

In my experience, following is must - report every incident - also document ever near miss - do proper RCA followed by CAPA - keep training team basis new learnings

• While operating keep the fork "15-20 cm" from the ground. • When loading items with the forklift, make sure that they are firmly placed against the backrest and then check the stability of the load. • While operating, avoid "3K driving" (Kyuhasshin, Kyuteishi, Kyusenkai)"Sudden Acceleration" "Sudden Stopping", "Sudden Turning". • When operating keep the speed under 8 km/h. • Drive the forklift in reverse when loading items that exceed the height standard of 1200 mm. • When turning left or right, use the direction blinker. • When transporting items in reverse, hold the "grip bar". • When leaving the driver's seat while working, be sure to engage the parking brake, turn the key to the OFF position and move the lever to the neutral position.

Aside the safe operation of the machine by the operators, some more safety devices can be added to the machine to alert the operator and other personnel in the work environment on their closeness to a forklift operation site and possibility of being hit by the forklift when at the blind spot of the operator. The use of a banksman during operation is advised along with some other safety devices installed.
