From my point of view, the best way to ensure safety in autonomous vehicles is to go with a technology that combines both active & passive safety systems, activating simultaneously in critical situations. For example, if we look at Tesla, their cars are equipped with active features like Tesla vision & ADAS (Advanced driver-assistance systems). Their passive safety features include Advanced Driver-Assistance Features like Forward/Side Collision Warning & Automatic Emergency Braking. According to NHTSA, Tesla drivers are 90% less likely to be involved in fatal accidents than an average car on the road. I think this is possible due to the combined effect of active & passive safety features.
