How can you explain feedback to writers in a way that is helpful and constructive?

When giving feedback to writers, start with positives to set a constructive tone. Be specific, pointing out what worked well and what didn't. Offer suggestions rather than commands, respecting their autonomy. Be objective and respectful, focusing on the writing, not the writer. Provide examples to illustrate your points clearly. Encourage revision as part of the writing process. Allow for clarification and questions. Follow up to acknowledge improvements. This approach fosters growth and improvement in writers' craft.

The importance of constructive feedback cannot be overemphasised. Feedback is all about helping others to get better. So as someone who wants to help other writers. First, the intention of the writing must be established. I have to know what type of objective the writer wants to achieve. It is just like a diagnosis, to find out which area of writing interest. Having this knowledge will help me to understand the area of feedback that is essential to the writing.

Always know the purpose of your critique beforehand. Are you aiming to help the writer improve their craft, offer direction for a specific project, or prepare a piece for publication? One thing I have found helpful about feedback is that it should be precise and balanced. Every feedback from experience should contain examples that are measurable and tangible. I have to take a look at the merits and demerits of it as this will allow for improvement. I will do my best to avoid any remarks or suggestions that have nothing to do with the writing. This is to avoid discouraging the writer.

Does it do any good to give a writer seeking feedback a negative comment? The comment should be positive to give room for motivation. Apart from a positive comment, I will be constructive in my feedback if there is an area to do so. Every comment I give should be genuine and not just to impress the writer. I have to be gentle and respectful and again there should be nothing to bring confusion. This is the reason the sandwich method is relevant.

Communication is the interaction between two people and so I will use it effectively in feedback. I will ask questions and get feedback from the writer. It is important not to bring bias to the table. Questions and dialogue help the writer to evaluate his writing goals and to clear any doubt or area of concern. Moreso, with dialogue, the writer will look into the comment to respond, for revision purposes and to review action.

As an editor, I rely on questions to dive deeper into the writer's intentions, goals, and concerns about their work. This helps me tailor feedback to their individual needs. Here are some of my go-to questions: Clarifying: "Can you explain the reasoning behind this character's actions in Chapter X?" Reflective: "What emotions were you aiming to evoke with this scene?" Exploratory: "Have you thought about shifting the timeline to build tension?" Diagnostic: "What do you feel is working well in the pacing of the story, and where might it need adjustment?" Feedback Preference: "When receiving feedback, do you prefer detailed comments or more general observations?"

Constructive feedback is not a one-time event. To truly support a writer's growth and development. Set up a system for tracking your feedback and the writer's progress. This can be a simple shared document where you note key points from each feedback session and the writer's action steps for revision. Schedule check-ins with the writer to review their progress and provide additional support as needed to maintain a consistent, supportive presence as the writer works through the revision process. Acknowledge the hard work they've put in and the improvements they've made based on your feedback.
