So, first of all, do you want more responsibility and higher expectations or do you think it just sounds good to say so? What I have done, as I have assumed different roles in leadership, is sit down with each member of team, for introduction. Who am I and who are you. Then at some point during conversation, I'll ask, "what is your goal". This is where rubber meets road. Stress to your team honesty. Stress that this is a journey with different paths and depending on how you answer, will dictate both leaders direction as well as he/she who wants more. Career advancement, do you want it or do you answer based on what you think the right answer is? Remember, this is a development building exercise shared by two.
