Outside of the core sciences, the concept of the best research field (or one you follow outright) is becoming less and less apparent. Instead of thinking about topics, methods and things you love to do, or that others tell you to do, instead take a step back and ask yourself: what is the question, before the question you are seeking to answer. If you do this, you will quickly see that the topic has a wide variety of interdisciplinary links, divergences and overlaps. You want to try to trace these points of connection to create something truly novel and innovative, by broadening your horizons and crossing disciplinary boundaries in ways others have not before you.
