In my opinion, recognizing fallacies is necessary so that we are aware of them and avoid them while making our own arguments. A person who is making an argument should be well prepared with all the essential information to support his argument. Facts, figures, examples are best ways of explaining your point. It is important to be a sport if people ask difficult questions and be patient, respond politely when people start attacking or getting overtly critical. Countering a fallacy on other person's argument should be done wisely. Grilling is not needed everytime. You might come across as a negative person if you are in a habit of countering each and every argument. The goal should be constructive decision making and not competition.
