Startups believe in hustlers. They believe in keep the team lean and taking the company through certain phases. they need doers. Show them your passion, your energy, your ambition. They love to hire people who are self driven and go above and beyond their normal scope of work. They love people who can multitask as this would be needed to kick start many functions internally. Also, they love those who are passionate about what they’re building and if you do enough research on the industry, competitors and the competitive advantage they’re building, then you have the job already :)

Align your abilities with their needs, demonstrate problem-solving and adaptability, highlight your entrepreneurial attitude, communicate clearly, fit into their culture, leverage your network, quantify achievements, and emphasize continual learning to impress startup founders. As a fellow founder, when considering candidates, the emphasis is not placed on fancy degrees or specific job experience. Start-up businesses go through many cycles in the process of stabilizing. Their leaders and their employees do a lot, usually in a short amount of time. Founders understand this, which is why it's extremely important to demonstrate your ability to be flexible, and deal with shifting tasks and priorities. I also think it's important to showcase how you can learn and be curious, as it's highly likely you'll be asked to perform work where you have no prior experience. As an entrepreneur, I enjoy talking to and working with people that bring a lot of positive energy and vibe to the table. They understand my mission and share my vision, they ask all the right questions and they show a can do attitude. I look for ppl with core skills and a willingness and flexibility to upskill and do what's required to be done at the moment. I also put a lot of importance on empathy and integrity and these are the values I look out for.

You can fit into a start-up culture only if you have a similar vision to grow and enthusiasm to help a business grow as if it's yours. - Founders don't look for superpowers to join them but someone who has the capabilities to understand the market and customers. - You need to show what attracts you to the company and how you want to contribute to its growth.

Most people I've interviewed had a terrific portfolio and skill set but they were too rigid in terms of schedules, availability and dedication. Being flexible is the key!

Where I tend to tune out speaking with candidates is when they come across just like the last person. I'm tired of regurgitated methodologies and self-congratulatory portfolios. Instead, surprise me with something unexpected about your outlook, your approach, or your experience. With bootcamps churning out cookie cutters of every role under the sun these days, candidates are beginning to sound alike. Folks who grab my attention buck that trend.
