How can you incorporate student leadership into middle school curriculum?

Making a leader is harder than building a raft on water. Developing confidence in learners will enable them to reach heights and thrive. Inspiring a shared vision and engaging them in real authentic discussions is the key to leadership. Authentic materials should be inseminated into our curriculum, teachers' agendas and classrooms If we were to develop a pool of leaders in schools. Role models, shared goals and visions are also key to leadership. Organization, initiative, responsibility are shiny terms that we all see on our kids' report card, but the question is: is it process-oriented?.

However, I believe what the late Warren Bennis said is true: “I don't know if you can teach leadership, but I know it can be learned.” One critical element in education is to ensure that students have continuous opportunities to learn ‘how’ to lead their learning. Once students understand their learning is personal (unique), they can learn better with others and lead others through their personal (unique) learning process.

Incorporating student leadership into the middle school curriculum is essential for fostering essential skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and decision-making. These are learned through: 1. Peer mentoring: Create opportunities for older middle school students to mentor and support younger students. Designate them as peer mentors, guiding younger students in academic or personal development areas. This promotes the student's leadership skills. 2. Student input and decision-making: Seek student input on school policies, curriculum design, or extracurricular activities. Develop a student advisory board that collaborates with administrators, teachers, and parents to make decisions regarding the school policies.

From a student perspective encourage extra curricular things such as clubs, leadership type functions into the classrooms. Give them opportunities to want to be a leader especially in things that they are good at or interested in. For example Christmas concerts have a student or students being stage hands or encourage clubs of their choosing that peak there interest where they learn to create their own leaders. Students are curious especially of a younger age, teach them skills of leadership young and by the time they hit college they will have some of those skills already developed. Year book clubs, ticket masters, ushers showing the art of going outside the norm and allowing them to shine.

I totally agree with you. Modelling the behaviours or values you expect the students to have, contributes a lot to the student's acquisition of leadership skills.
