The more exposure you have, the more you can increase your visibility, but at the same time, you must be clear about what you want, but above all, why you want that visibility, and how you want to be perceived. Set your goal, your audience and the messages that will be part of your narrative (your personal brand) and move along that path, adding value and maintaining your humility at every step.

Provide value to others both internally and externally. Internally, make sure you have connections across as many departments/functions as possible, especially your key internal customers. Get to know them and what their needs/painpoints are, then help them address those painpoints. Externally, join local groups/organizations as well as online digital groups and forums. Help others - give your knowledge and insights away from time to time. For instance, I often speak at live and digital events on marketing communications and digital marketing and provide specific "how to do it" information. It may seem counterintuitive, but what I've found is that few attendees have the time, inclination or aptitude to actually do it themselves.
