This is the most crucial aspect that gets ignored. Most VCs promise their founders to add value specifically by opening their international network, but they don't do it well. One of the primary reasons for this is that they don't track these metrics for themselves, and the approach remains ad-hoc. Monitoring and tracking the result will build better accountability in the VC team and improve ownership. Also, this will give well-defined metrics that can be used as VCs pitch to startups or LPs. Therefore, one needs to track and monitor the results of their value add in a well-quantified manner.

This is one of the most overlooked factors in emerging markets. If you come from a less-developed startup ecosystem and are not well connected internationally, it is VERY VERY helpful to have a VC/investor who can help you "bridge" internationally. Too often talented founders in isolated ecosystems take money from local investors who have zero value-add internationally. Conventional business owners or from rich families they have no clue what it takes to scale a startup, nor reputation nor networks to help. If you take this money it's what I call "dead money" on the cap table. Instead of having a highly connected and valable advocate with a vested interest in your success, you just have investors who have zero or negative value.
