I view my mentor-mentee relationships as a collaboration. I currently serve as a mentor and I have a mentor. When I seek someone to serve as a mentor for me, I desire someone who has successfully walked the path I'm about to step onto. I check my Ego at the door and focus on listening and learning. When I am serving as a mentor, I'm also focused on listening and learning. A productive mentor-mentee relationship is built on trust. Trust in any relationship takes time and transparency. When you look at the mentor-mentee relationship as a collaborative one, you each become a stakeholder and this is where the magic happens!

Choose someone with relevant experience and skills in your field, who aligns with your values and goals, and is willing and available to guide you. Explore your network, industry associations, and online platforms for potential mentors. When reaching out, send a clear, respectful message introducing yourself, your work, and your interest in their mentorship, laying the foundation for a successful mentoring relationship.

Finding a mentor is about building a connection with someone you trust and look up to. We don't know what we don't know. Having someone with more years of experience in the field you are interested, will help save time and money on mistakes you are likely to make. We all make mistakes but learning from someone that has already made those and can help you to not make those mistakes is invaluable!

Discuss and agree on the scope, frequency, duration, and format of interactions, as well as specific goals and objectives. A written agreement or contract is beneficial to prevent misunderstandings and ensure they align both parties on the mentorship's direction and expectations.

It is paramount to be prepared for your sessions. This shows respect for your mentor and your commitment to this relationship. Let your mentor know as soon as you know that you won't make your appointment or will be late. Your mentor's time is valuable and they will leave you if you are unprepared and therefore disrespectful. My mentees are ready to answer my three questions for every session: 1) What has changed since our last session? 2) What are you doing now? 3) What are you getting ready to do? The first rule is to be open and honest at "all" times. The best mentors know you from the inside out. The more they know about what you like to do; who your friends are and what they like to do; what your company's leaders think about your industry and where the company is headed; what M&A's are in the works for your company and industry; and finally how much time, energy and focus on yourself both psychologically and physically. In my experience as both a mentor and mentee, I have learned that it is very important to show gratitude and appreciation. As a mentee, you must realize that your mentor is taking time out of their busy day to assist you. A simple thank you is always welcome, but more importantly, make sure that you are applying the advice that is given. Remember, they have already travelled down the path that you are on, and are simply trying to help you avoid the pitfalls that you will inevitably face. If your mentor sees that you are consistently applying their advice, they will continue to invest their limited time and energy assisting you.

They have a big emphasis on mentoring leadership, learning how to give positive, constructive feedback and completing your goals. Plus it's fun! The ideal mentor is one who does not see the mentee as a threat or a competitor. Good mentors are always ready to show their protégé the ropes, the ins and outs of the space they are in and above all, sometimes help to open doors that would otherwise be shut. On the flip side of the coin, the mentee should respect the opportunities, resources (especially time and networks) that the mentor gives them access to because they are worth more than gold to the mentor. Those relationships and resources are not for selfish gain. A good mentee will also pay it forward as a way of making greater impact.
