How can you make social innovation more inclusive and accessible?

Today is the era of Social Innovation and to make it inclusive and accessible requires understanding of what will make it serve its purpose and successful.May start with researching the trend and data ,make stakeholders interested to participate in what you want to achieve,make it look purposeful,depict it pictorially.

It's crucial to immerse yourself in comprehensive research and active listening. This approach isn't just about gathering data; it's about genuinely understanding the lived experiences and unique challenges faced by those at the heart of the issue. Co-creation is key here. By involving users and beneficiaries in the solution-building process, you ensure that the innovation is not only relevant but also resonates with their needs and realities. However, this is just the starting point. Recognizing and actively addressing the inherent power imbalances and biases in this process is critical. These biases can skew your perspective and lead to solutions that, while well-intentioned, might not fully address the nuances of the problem.

Indeed, the foundation of successful social innovation is understanding the issue. A sophisticated awareness of the issues can be developed by conducting in-depth research and conversing with people from various backgrounds. Relevance and inclusion are ensured when partners that are directly impacted co-create solutions. Moreover, to avoid unintended consequences and advance real good change, it is imperative to acknowledge and deal with power dynamics, prejudices, and presumptions. More accessible and meaningful social innovation starts with a well-informed and inclusive approach during the problem-definition phase.

La innovación social de forma natural es social, es decir, que nos pertenece a todos y más que acceder a ella participamos en su desarrollo. ¿Cuál es la anomalía entonces? En países latinoamericano el "hacer innovación" está capturada por una elite que tiene alto conocimiento y redes, quienes la comparten o intentan hacer partícipes de sus bondades cuando ya genera impacto. Es como si la sacaran de la sociedad únicamente para volver a ponerla, argumentando hacer innovación social. Lo correcto es que acepten que la innovación no puede no ser social pues naturalmente nace, se desarrolla y madura en sociedad. Con todos. Para todas.

Understanding the problem is not doing online research. It’s about engaging the people whom you’re solving for, observing them, having conversations with them, most importantly it’s about putting aside what you think you know about the problem and opening up to learning.

It is important to highlight that considering minority needs and perspectives instead of focusing solely on the majority can also contribute to both profitability and social innovation. By addressing the specific requirements of minority groups, companies can tap into new markets and consumer segments, expanding their customer base and increasing revenue streams. Social innovation is also fostered as companies develop products and services that cater to a more diverse range of needs, contributing positively to societal well-being. In essence, a focus on minorities not only aligns with ethical business practices but also has the potential to drive innovation.

A utilização de tecnologia, especialmente através de algoritmos e avanços nos métodos de identificação de vieses em inteligência artificial, tem um potencial significativo. No entanto, é vital adotar uma postura construtiva e analítica desde o início. Envolver uma ampla gama de experiências e perspectivas no processo é crucial para enriquecer a discussão e promover soluções verdadeiramente inclusivas. Com essa abordagem colaborativa e consciente, acredito firmemente que podemos caminhar em direção a um futuro mais diverso e acessível.

When building systems, often wr incorporate testing for performance and security, but don’t often build in non-functional requirements around diversity and inclusion, often referring to them as edge cases and designing MVP for the 90%, and focusing on the highest value demographics. By creating an standard accessibility framework and imbedding this into our process, system, and product design journey (including requirement and testing phases), we can automatically design for social inclusion, whether those with different abilities across language, literacy, different physical abilities, channels of engagement, and across demographic profiles etc.

It's also important to design WITH diversity. How and when you carry out your customer research can have a significant impact on the diversity of respondants you will get. For example consider that digital literacy could impact representation from some groups if you only seek views online. Shift work, and mobility issues might mean that you lose sight of opinions from other groups if you are only carrying out face to face customer interviews, in the middle of the week in an out-of-town location. In order to design for diversity, it is important to ensure your inputs and design process reflect and encourage diversity.

collaboration and networking are pivotal in scaling social innovation. It's not just about pooling resources, but also about leveraging diverse perspectives and expertise. By partnering with like-minded entities, you can amplify your impact and navigate complex market dynamics more effectively. Engaging with stakeholders, especially those directly affected by your innovation, is crucial. Their insights can guide your approach, ensuring it remains relevant and impactful. Remember, inclusivity in social innovation isn't just a moral imperative; it's a strategic one. By embracing a wide range of voices and experiences, you're more likely to develop solutions that are both innovative and sustainable.

Innovation is a conversation in time, space and culture. In order to better design for social benefit, it’s key to engage all the different stakeholders around the topic, from institutional decision makers, community enablers, private companies and citizens. To bridge different needs and perspective I suggest you to: 1. make the goal always visible and repeat it over and over (shift away from it is too easy for everyone in the room); 2. Start from the basic and essentials topics, then build complexity over it. Keeping foundations on the same values helps you and all the parties involved in the future.

Foster collaboration by engaging with diverse stakeholders, including community members, organizations, and experts. Building a network allows for a more holistic approach, tapping into collective knowledge and resources to address complex challenges.

Also the key to making social innovation more inclusive, involves diversifying voices in the decision-making process, ensure representation from marginalized communities, prioritize accessibility, and foster collaborative initiatives that can address a broad spectrum of needs.

Through my organisation Mediaceso and its menstrual cup brand Shecup we conduct menstrual health management workshops and pro-bono cervical cancer check ups in backward and rural parts of India. One of the most challenging places we worked in was Sonagachi - the largest red light area in Asia to provide free cervical cancer check ups; though it was free of charge we faced a very low walk-in rate and rumors started to spread in the community that getting yourself diagnosed with the colposcope would lead to cervical cancer. To combat this misconception and have a wider impact, we started training the daughters of the sex workers themselves to conduct these tests. This not only empowered them but also bust myths leading to higher success!

I believe that in addition to providing educational programs to increase awareness and understanding of innovative practices, it is important to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills required to participate and train others in their communities. By involving community members in workshops and training sessions, we increase the chances that people will adopt and implement innovative practices in their lives. For instance, in HIV research and prevention, we provided community members with tools, training materials, and preventive methods such as condoms and pills. These community members then went on to facilitate workshops and train others on the importance of using preventive methods.

La innovación tiene una función social, y es hacer la vida más fácil a los usuarios sin importar variables como su habitat, nivel económico o condición física. Es necesario educar a la sociedad de la necesidad de una innovación al servicio de las personas, consciente de los problemas de que la base de usuarios es diversa y que todos tienen derecho a beneficiarse de los avances que facilita la innovación.

What you can't measure - can't be managed. Three suggestions: A. Set up a Theory of Change with 3 to 5 outcome parameters. B. Have a north star metrics that makes sure you are on track. In addition there can be 7 to 10 KPIs. C. Have periodic check backs with your customers and target groups and capture qualitative deep dives.

Measuring impact of social innovation is crucial but challenging. We need more effective and structured tools for it. Since social innovations tackle social problems and have different characteristics from conventional innovations, it deserves new ways of measuring by domain experts.

I have learned the integration of a feedback loop of measurement is pivotal in enhancing the inclusivity and accessibility of social innovation. Initiating with well-defined objectives and measurable KPIs, the process employs diverse tools such as surveys, interviews, and observations to collect relevant data. Analysis of this data not only evaluates the effectiveness and unintended consequences of the innovation but also informs iterative improvements. By learning from failures, replicating successes, and maintaining transparency through reporting, the approach ensures continuous communication with stakeholders and fosters adaptability.

The best way to measure is through feedback surveys as to how the innovation is affecting the community. Has it evoked a positive change or adverse effect? Assess the positive impact and also the failures and then assess yourself from there then make the necessary adjustments

Recognizing efforts and milestones boosts morale and fosters a culture of appreciation and teamwork. It's essential to remember that innovation is a collective journey, not a solo endeavor. Equally important is the acknowledgment of challenges and limitations. This isn't admitting defeat; it's about being transparent and learning-oriented. It shows maturity and a commitment to continuous improvement. Sharing stories and best practices is where the real magic happens. It's not just about showcasing success; it's a tool for community building and learning. By contributing to the broader ecosystem, you're not just amplifying your impact; you're also gaining insights and perspectives that can fuel future innovations.

Recognize and celebrate successes, both big and small. Acknowledge the contributions of diverse individuals and communities to foster a positive and inclusive atmosphere. Highlighting achievements encourages continued engagement and collaboration.

El valor del reconocimiento me parece poco estudiado. Por que no debe ser algo mecánico, debe ser orgánico y validado o con un espacio fértil para que el reconocimiento sea socializado, y más que un premio, sea un incentivo coherente con el relato del equipo.

Make it a social movement! Social innovation is just starting point. Once you turn it to a movement, things will change dramatically. To do so, you should address the problem very well, tackle a challenging problem of large groups and design the value proposition very well.

Having worked with people of diverse talents and nationalities , I can say that social innovation thrives on clashing perspectives and colliding ideas. Specifically, what I’ve learned are: Collective Think Tank: Forget solo brainstorms. Build teams that are kaleidoscopes of backgrounds, experiences, and even opposing views. Friction sparks brilliance. Weave Innovation into the discussion: There is no monopoly of ideas, collaborate with others even competitors. Go to action, fast! Action speaks louder than whiteboard scribbles. Prototype fast, test, and fail (smartly!) fast,modify Inclusion isn't a spectator sport. It's a messy, collaborative, beautiful dance of diverse minds breaking barriers and building a better tomorrow, together.

Technology for Accessibility: Leverage technology to create accessible solutions that accommodate different abilities and needs. Ensure that digital platforms, applications, and tools are designed with features such as screen readers, adjustable font sizes, and language options to cater to a diverse user base. Inclusive Design Principles: Embrace inclusive design principles that consider the needs of users with varying abilities, backgrounds, and languages. Prioritize simplicity, clarity, and flexibility in design to make social innovations more usable and understandable for a broad range of individuals.

Remember that, when you have diverse views, you can't please everyone 100%. Everyone needs to respect everyone else's views, and negotiate in good faith. Nobody will get everything they want, but everyone should feel they got some value/improvement.
