How can you make your speeches more urgent and impactful?

Context matters. Why are you on the stage, and why should people be giving you their time to listen to you? You need to have a powerful story, and it needs to be your story, not using other people’s stories or experiences… anyone can do that. Why would they pay someone who isn’t an athlete to use athlete stories? Wouldn’t they just rather hire an athlete to speak on the stage instead? And don’t use bullet points- anyone can read out loud… again, why would they pay you to read out loud… anyone can do that. You need to quickly get to the meat of your story in the opening minute like any good prologue, and it needs to be something that says you have earned the right to be on that stage.

It's critical to make sure that you are, in fact, telling a specific story. The biggest mistake I often see with speakers who use stories is the lack of specificity. They either give a brief example or they give an overarching life story in a minute. I want the specific details, put me in the room, as the great advice goes Show don't tell. That's what will get me to think and feel like you. I will become part of the story and I will feel what the character is feeling. This is what creates Impact. Urgency is created by the degree of pain the main character is experiencing and the time pressure they are under. The stakes determines the urgency. Tell stories where the outcome REALLY matters to the main character.

The true first point to enhance the urgency and impact of your speeches, it's crucial to deeply connect with your audience. Position yourself as one of them, understand their distinctive qualities, and tailor your message to resonate with what sets them apart.

Stories inspire for sure. People are emotional beings and so to inspire your team or clients or the world at large stories with the right content and message make sense. Of course there is need for facts and figures to support your story but it is the story that catches people’s imagination. Tell a story and your audience is captivated!

I always like to share a story which is from a past experience of myself as my belief in the story is contagious and it is reflecting on the passion and energy I exude during the presentation. It also give the audience a glimpse of who I am and the value I hold and helps to project authenticity and help me to connect with the audience.

It's vital to tailor your message to your audience to engage and persuade them effectively. Mastering the art of storytelling is a significant advantage, as it captures the audience's attention and gradually leads them through an emotional journey.

For business owners, framing with the Gap or Challenge your ideal client faces is essential at the top of your speech. If you don't activate their pain, they will not be as compelled to hear what you say next. Then, you connect the dots to how your solution solves that pain. There are lots of ways to do this, but they must feel as if what you are saying will work for them. If this isn't done effectively, no Call to Action will be effective at the end.

I have found that it is crucial to know your audience. Who are you speaking to? Do your homework. Then, you can direct your talk to relate to the audience. You are on stage to give value to the audience. It’s not about you. Include the audience in your talk, ask questions, relate to them, get them to engage. If you can do this successfully, they are more likely to hear your message.

Framing a message and making it simple to understand with a call-to-action of how something can be executed collectively as a group or individual is key.

Framing can make a huge difference, especially if you can make it relatable. Large numbers and big concepts are often hard for an audience to grasp. Using stories and analogies and chunking the information into more relatable chunks can be very powerful. Millions of Pounds/Dollars are often not very tangible to an audience. Instead, try translating numbers into more Human terms. Comparisons are often very effective. "The factory site is about 600 square meters" or "The site is about the size of two football fields."

Creating a contrast is always very helpful for any speaker as this depicts an immediate difference between the two situations, or two pictures and the audience is able to choose one of the options or is ready to select one and reject the another. It's very useful for speaker and we find many political leaders and business managers use this technique to make their points more effective and impactful.

For me the contrast is helping people take the journey with you by physically moving from what was to what is now, if that makes sense.

Utilizing contrast in your presentation serves as a powerful tool to clarify your message, captivate interest, and enhance impact. By juxtaposing opposing ideas, outcomes, or scenarios, you illuminate key points more vividly, making abstract concepts tangible and memorable. This technique not only heightens the audience's understanding but also keeps them engaged by introducing dynamic tension and resolution. Contrast can spotlight the stark differences between 'before' and 'after,' 'problem' and 'solution,' or 'status quo' and 'innovative future,' driving home your message with greater force. Such strategic use of contrast not only enriches your presentation but also leaves a lasting impression, compelling your audience to reflect & act.

Drawing from experience, I recommend concluding each key series with a comprehensive list of "key takeaways" and reflective questions. This interactive approach ensures that your audience retains the information while also encouraging them to further explore the topic, reflecting on your ideas and extending the conversation.

Repeating key points with memorable alliteration or catchy rhythms can dramatically land your message and build momentum, engraining your core concepts in the audience's memory. This rhythmic recall—think of it as the 'rhythm of remembrance'—transforms your presentation into an unforgettable melody of words. By strategically sprinkling your speech with repeated refrains or alliterative anchors, you make complex ideas stickier and more digestible. This not only captivates attention but also ensures that your message resonates long after the applause fades, turning your words into lasting echoes in the minds of your audience.

It is important to know your audience, I will do some background work on who will be attending to ensure the language and tonality I use, suit the environment. Be clear and specific, and emphasise important points, pause after them, giving the audience time to digest the information. Build in some audience participation to engage them more. Ensure you end with something they can take away or even get them thinking by asking "What is the one thing you will take from today and implement as soon as you can" thank them and leave them with this thought.

One might consider the use of repetition as a tool to utilize sparingly. To elaborate, it is effective to repeat the main points, using both phrases and questions. Repetition is key for the most important points, tying it together with a call to action.

Encouraging your audience to take action is crucial for delivering urgent and impactful speeches. A clear and specific call to action motivates your audience, inspires change, and measures your impact effectively.

The call to action is key. But don’t just tell people what to do. If this worked, information would be the only thing we need. Highlight the benefits of taking action and probably even more importantly, clarify the consequences of inaction. What will it cost them? Time? Energy? Money? Ego? Social status? The more you can make the consequences relevant, the more people will take action and the more impact you’ll have.

Don't Let Them Leave Empty-Handed From Spark to Action: Don't let their fireflied attention fizzle out. A clear call to action is the bridge between inspiration and impact. Specificity is Key: Don't say "change the world." Be specific. "Visit our website to download the resources mentioned and start today!" Benefits & Costs: Highlight the rewards of taking action (improved lives, achieved goals) and the potential consequences of inaction (missed opportunities). Urgency's Whisper: Create a sense of "now or never" to prevent procrastination. Use phrases like "limited spots available" or "offer ends soon." Steps to Success: Don't leave them hanging. Provide clear, actionable steps they can take immediately to put your words into practice.

We spend most of our time worrying about sharing the best tools, stories, and ways to help our audience. However, if we do not provide them with a roadmap for implementation, our words will be lost in the daily grind of the next day, when they will once again face their giants. In my experience, I have seen how the lack of follow-up with people, beyond the message itself and the tools we share with them, is the main obstacle that prevents them from finally overcoming their limitations. We must build a message that not only motivates and invites action, but also generates application contexts. People know many things, but they do not know how to execute them.

Every so often, a heckler will challenge you. Your response? Either ignore or confront them directly. If confronting, do so peacefully yet forcefully. Address their concerns by reframing with a question, demonstrating authority and confidence. This approach, showcasing your ability to navigate tough situations, impresses potential clients and helps you stand out.

Before conducting an important presentation, I prefer to gather feedback from three distinct types of individuals: An expert in the field: This could be someone deeply knowledgeable about the subject matter, possessing significant experience or qualifications relevant to the topic. A confidant who represents my audience: This individual should ideally mirror the demographic or mindset of my intended audience. Whether a friend, colleague, or acquaintance. Someone unrelated to the topic: This person brings a fresh perspective untainted by prior knowledge or biases related to the subject matter.

I love the comment about addressing negative feedback, as I believe it is an important topic to discuss. When preparing for a presentation, it is crucial to outline the direction you want your audience to take. A skilled presenter should also prepare versions of their speech that address potential negative responses that may arise. Just as we prepare for the positives, we must also prepare for the negatives. This type of preparation will help us remain focused and composed throughout the entire presentation, even when the audience presents unexpected challenges.

In my experience, I've always asked for feedback. A critic might be good or bad, but if you look at it without judgment, it can always bring a new perspective you didn't consider.

Use a progressive structure when you talk. Many speakers don't realize that you need to grab attention at the beginning, pull them in, and then have each section of your talk compel the audience to listen to the next - which then organically leads to your call to action. Without a progressive structure, speakers might either "present information" in an uncompelling way, or instead resort to being manipulative to engage the audience. For great structures, look no further than Aristotle. He got a lot right!

To make your speeches impactful, consider these tips: 1. Know Your Audience: Tailor your message to resonate with your audience's interests, values, and needs. 2. Craft a Compelling Message: Have a clear purpose and structure for your speech, with a strong opening, body, and conclusion. 3. Use Engaging Delivery: Practice confident body language, varied vocal tone.

Don't be tempted by attention-getting. I've seen flashy, loud, striking, star-studded presos (especially for whiz-bang products with wow-neato new features) which quickly fizzle because they got attention but didn't keep it. Instead, create urgency & impact with the thing that the audience wants most: *what the audience wants most.* Duh. Attention-seeking & self-impression ultimately result only in impressing yourself. If you reallllllllly want impact that causes your audience to think/feel/act urgently, take the time to understand why they should listen to you *from their standpoint* and speak about how you fulfill THAT.

During COVID I attended a webinar that a friend had invited me to. It was to do with affiliate marketing and trading now. The leader who spoke was brilliant. They had such charisma. They were very positive for enthusiastic. What they did brilliantly was talk about the previous life struggles they had before, and they themselves nearly didn't take up the opportunity. But once they did , once they started to the work how much their lives changed. They portrayed a sense of care and urgency - you ve got to do it now , don't wait. Think about the difference you will make. I signed up - couldn't resist But it didn't last long as wasn't aligned. People are on different steps but what we can all do is "take the next small step". 🙂
