How can you measure server performance for IT Operations?

Let's kick things off by making sure our server setup is top-notch and aligns with the business game plan for the next 5 years. We're talking about checking if our existing server has the muscle to handle the growing user gang – you know, the right hardware (Processor, Memory, Disk Space, Network wizardry) and the freshest Operating System on the block. Surprisingly, many folks miss out on this data gold mine. Based on this treasure trove, we can dial in the performance parameters for our servers – from basic monitoring like keeping an eye on resource utilization, response time, throughput, capacity, and security to going full-on ninja with advanced monitoring, including user experience monitoring.

To start with first we need to make sure if the Server is correctly setup as per business requirement and the forecast of business for next 5 years. Whether the existing server has required capacity to meet the demands of growing users. Whether we have the right Hardware (Processor, Memory, Disk Space, Network capabilities) and Operating System (Is it on latest O/S). Whether a through load test is conducted with sufficient users. Most of the customers or service providers fail to analyze this data. Based on this is we can setup the parameters for Servers Performance. Whether it can be basic monitoring( Resource utilization, Response time, Throughput, Capacity, Security ) to advance monitoring ( Basic + User experience Monitoring)

Server performance for IT operations can be measured through various metrics such as CPU usage, memory utilization, disk I/O, network traffic, and response times for requests. Ideally, the server CPU utilization should be in the range of 60% to 75%. This way it is neither underutilised nor overutilized.

Even disk alignment from 32bit to 64bit will increase performance.

My view would be to analyze and understand the requirement. Server Monitoring is an old term. Now we need to think from the business side and design the matrices in such a way that, it connects all the way up to application performance and business process flows. The availability monitoring is a basic thing now, how we can observe the behavior and predict an issue before it happens is the new world !

Em minha experiência , quando um servidor apresenta, baixa performance , o primeiro sinal vem dos usuários que relatam lentidão em suas operações. Podemos de tentados a inferir tratar-se de um problema de infraestrutura "Rede" . Porém existem outros fatores a considerar. Ferramentas como Zabbix associadas ao Dynatrace , vão oferecer uma analise segura da causa raiz.

Just a different perspective, when was the last time your customer asked what the load on your servers was? Are you measuring what they care about? None of CPU/Memory/DiskIO/Response Times matter if you aren't measuring what matters most.

I prefer focus on workload performance. Server performance is pretty fixed in the purchased specification. The thing you can shape is the workload. The flow of highway traffic is governed by almost any other factor than the rated performance (in horsepower / or kilowatts) of the vehicles. Even a compound measure like power to weight ratio does not correlate with overall traffic flow in any meaningful way.

Understanding its dependencies (Databases, Upstream and Downstream connections) 3. Antivirus scans and its detection patterns. 4. Indexing and Query Optimisation. 5. Hops b/w Src <-> Dest and calculating the latency. 6. Regular monitoring of system resources and bandwidth usage with tools to make sure neither underutilised nor overburdened. 7. Regular Lifecycle Management (OS, Database, Application - patches and upgrades). Also, some Regular housekeeping tasks.
