How can you network effectively outside of your industry?

There is no one rule of thumb for networking outside your industry, as long as you're actually curious about knowing other people's business model and how they found a working functionality around their own vertical. Anybody would be humbled to know that someone is interested in knowing their business so deeply, and if they actually get to see some value in sharing that information they will share it regardless of the idea of connecting any dots for their personal benefit. Networking isn't just about talking to people about their business or work, it is merely as simple as having a conversation that doesn't have to reach any fruition of any sorts. Let it be as organic as possible.

When you're networking outside your usual crowd, think about what you all might have in common beyond work. Maybe it's a hobby or a cause you're all passionate about. Use social media to connect, share your thoughts, and join groups that talk about broader stuff, not just your job. Go to different events—ones that might not seem directly related to what you do, but where you can still bring something valuable. And don’t forget, when you meet new folks, focus on building a real connection, not just swapping business cards. Keep in touch, offer a hand when you can, and don't shy away from learning something new from them. Oh, and follow up! It's the secret sauce to making those relationships stick.

If you want to network outside the industry, start by putting your stakes in it. Although my profession is 180 degrees opposite (Software Industry), I have some basic knowledge of Dairy due to a rural background. I began investing in publicly listed companies in the Dairy sector, which helped me understand their business, product offerings and business viability. Next, I participated in their yearly events and expos, where I could meet different stakeholders in the Dairy sector, ranging from dairy producers, assemblers, and importers of value-added products for Dairy. These events essentially help you find people with whom you can ask specific questions about the industry, potentially aiding you in starting your own business if you wish.

First of all one has to be clear about what his core area(s) of interest is/are. Once he/she has identified the areas of interest then setting a goal will be easier for making further connections.

Once area of interest is identified try to do research on current opportunities and threats. SWOT analysis would be suitable.

Don't discount the value you add from coming from outside that industry. Different perspectives are valuable and as much as you should research extensively, don't lose your viewpoint and value.

Conduct research on the industries of interest. Understand their business models, trends, challenges, and opportunities. Identify key players, influencers, events, and publications relevant to those industries. This groundwork aids in finding potential contacts, refining your pitch, and engaging in meaningful conversations.

Networking isn't just about building a long contact list of people who you don't really ever chat or connect with. Often networking is seen as a chore/task which has to be done rather than a genuine intent of networking with people to fully engage and create a relationship. Often the perceived outcome of networking is more focused on rather than the genuine intent of wanting to network. People want to connect and in doing so want to be heard and listen to genuine conversations not immediate sales pitches.

nix your first question being "what do you do?" It's boring and overused. When you're networking in a new industry, get to know who people are outside of work. Ask them what they like to do for fun, and how they recharge their batteries. Get to know them on a personal level first, before you ask about what they do.

Finally try to connect with person of interest using social platforms like LinkedIn or any other platform. Its better to exchange email id for further communication as it makes communication more formal.

If you are wanting to open your networking doors, then the best way is to ask questions. We have a multitude of platforms available to us that encourage networking. If it is a sector make use of the search boxes. If it is a company ask a question to your opposite position in that company after all you have things in common. Be cheeky, offer to come and see them so they can show you where they work that way you can make contacts throughout the business. Reaching out with respect via networking isn't about barging into their inbox with a 'do you want to work with us' there has to be some thought behind it. Tailor it to the person you are speaking with.

Planning your demo involves reaching out with a mindset of genuine curiosity and respect, especially when engaging with individuals outside your industry. It's crucial to avoid making assumptions, asking generic questions, or imposing your agenda. Instead, prioritize open-ended inquiries, active listening, and expressions of appreciation. Clearly articulate who you are, your role, and the purpose of your outreach in a concise and compelling manner. Demonstrate the value you can bring to them and highlight the mutual benefits of establishing a connection. Just connecting once will not make a good connection. Try to follow up using email, phone or social media chat, try to keep it professional unless both of you are open to personal mix as well.

Likewise, do the same for folks who reach out to you - take the time to support others as they seek to expand their network as well. Networking is a mutual exchange of time, ideas, and conversation.

Effective networking is a continuous process requiring regular follow-up and follow-through. Keep in touch with contacts, update them on your progress, share relevant information, and offer assistance. Honor commitments, deliver on promises, and seek feedback. Consistency and reliability contribute to building lasting relationships.

Only 1 in 10 people search for feedback. people who seek feedback put themselves in a situation of scrutiny with the intention of listening, understanding, correcting and progressing. If you do so, this shows your capacity to grow, that new network will appreciated, going home remembering your name.

Use that wonderful internet to search for likeminded networking groups. This can be on a personal interest or a professional one. Use your job title with networking at the end to find specific groups. If there isn't one maybe start one as if you are looking for it, others will be too.

Use the 3F formula. Find people in your target industry and ask them, 1. Where do you FREQUENT? 2. Who do you FOLLOW? 3. Where do you spend your FUNDs? This will give you a direct insight into placing yourself in the right circles + cultivating relationships with decision-makers.

While challenging, networking outside your industry can be highly rewarding, fostering professional growth and opening new possibilities. Effectively navigating this process allows you to learn, expand your horizons, and build meaningful connections.
