How can you prioritize features and requirements using priority management frameworks?

I frequently use Kano Model for feature prioritization. This divides features into threshold, performance and excitement attributes. Additionally, you can add two other attributes, indifferent features and dis-satisfiers. ->Threshold attributes: These are must have features. Without them, the product won't function. ->Performance attributes: These are the features that increase the user's satisfaction level. For example, a unique UI(using neumorphism/glassmorphism designs). ->Excitement attributes: These are delighters such as personalized recommendations and different colored themes. Additionally, Indifferent features are those that user does not use much. And dis-satisfier are those that user does not want.

I like using Impact vs. Effort. It helps us do things that matter a lot without using too much time and energy. We focus on easy things that give us big results quickly. This way, we balance what we need now and what we want in the future. It's simple, flexible, and keeps everyone happy.

RICE is the most commonly used prioritization framework in product management interviews as well as in practical scenarios. The application of RICE Scoring can make a big difference in the project's timeline. ->Reach: How many people could potentially benefit from a feature. ->Impact: Measures its worth, value it would bring. ->Confidence: Assesses data certainty and quality of information available. ->Effort: Estimates resources required to complete a task. Finally, you can get the RICE score using this formula: (R*I*C)/E This method ensures that the focus is on high-impact, feasible initiatives first, streamlining resources effectively and driving substantial value with each release.

Assess each feature based on the number of people it will reach within a certain period, the impact it will have on each individual, your confidence in these estimates, and the effort required to implement it. By quantifying these dimensions, RICE allows you to calculate a score that objectively ranks features or initiatives. This data-driven approach ensures that you focus on high-impact, feasible projects that align with strategic goals, maximizing resource efficiency and product success.

Calculate each feature's score by considering how many users it will reach, the level of impact on those users, your confidence in these estimates, and the effort required to implement. For example, adding a payment integration might have high Reach and Impact, medium Confidence, and significant Effort. This quantitative approach helps objectively decide which features will offer the most value relative to their cost.

I have used MoSCoW model more as a framework to flushout the details of an idea. Using it is easy as we can focus on ground rules and core functuionalities to make the feature work aka must-have.Should-have will complete the feature and ensure growth and usage, examples could be to UX and accessibility. could-have is something that I decide based on resources and priority, these are the things that make users go 🤩 Wont'd-have is a quick way to control scope. This helps prioritize on the other important stuff and helps run a tight ship.

The MoSCoW method has been my go-to approach - simple and practical! Focus on the 'Must Have' features. These are critical features essential for the core functionality of the product. For example, in an e-commerce platform, a functional checkout process including easy navigation and payment processing would be considered as a "Must Have" feature. Without it, the platform would fail to serve its primary purpose of facilitating transactions. Involve stakeholders: Gather inputs from customers, end-users, PMs, and developers. This will provide clarity in prioritizing features. Consider Impact vs Effort: Create an impact vs effort matrix for each feature. Features with high impact and low effort should be prioritized higher.

Using the moscow method, usually comes with it's challenge. Sometimes, stakeholders aren't not on the same page seeing which features or requirements are needed to be prioritize. Having to incorporate feedback loops from internal stakeholder and also having to eligitimate the solutions from the user testing or market conditions can prevent the situation at hand. Prioritizing should always consider the user's needs and the product value proposition to ensure market fit and user satisfaction

For a new e-commerce website, Must haves include a secure checkout process, Should haves could be user reviews, Could haves might be a recommendation engine, and Won't haves could defer a live chat support for now. This prioritization ensures essential features are developed first, balancing resource allocation effectively while keeping future enhancements in view.

Using the Value vs Effort Matrix revolutionizes prioritization by balancing potential impact against required investment. It's a strategic compass for navigating resource allocation, distinguishing between high-impact, low-effort "Quick Wins" and resource-intensive "Major Projects" worthy of careful planning. It also highlights "Fill-Ins" for downtime productivity and warns against "Time Sinks" that drain resources. It’s a straightforward, yet powerful framework for maximizing efficiency and value in product development and project management.

Using the above frameworks can help prioritize requirements, but engenders the risk that you miss the larger picture. I have found it useful to think about the roadmap in terms of themes. For example, your themes could be 1) Deliver product innovation (aka new features) 2) Respond to competitive pressures 3) Address Tech Debt You can be creative in selecting your themes but dont go beyond 3 (max 4). Keep it simple, and easily understandable to your stakeholders. Thinking in terms of themes helps keep sight of the larger picture even as you prioritize individual requirements. Another advantage is that it becomes much easier to get your stakeholders - internal and external - to understand your roadmap and get on board with it.

Beyond qualitative frameworks, I always strive to quantify the impact of proposed features with estimates. Even without precise figures, incorporating estimations into our analysis helps maintain focus on outcomes. This approach prevents unrealistic expectations regarding the financial benefits of features with low or medium impact potential.

When prioritizing features, also consider market trends, competitor actions, and technological advancements. For instance, if competitors have introduced AI-driven personalization, evaluate how integrating similar technology could benefit your product and position in the market. Balancing internal priorities with external influences ensures your product remains competitive and meets evolving user expectations, facilitating strategic decision-making that aligns with both immediate and long-term goals.
