How can you recognize and reward volunteers on a limited budget?

What has always worked for me is acknowledgement, I have always enjoyed writing out personalized heartfelt notes expressing my gratitude for their time and effort. I like to remind others that whatever the capacity they are involved in creating, it offers a significant impact overall and they are appreciated. I like to think this is something that a person can always reflect upon and contribute to their worthiness. People may think this is a small feat or a lost art, but I know first hand how special it can make one feel.

Of all the ways I've seen organizations celebrate and recognize volunteer milestones, here are 3 favorites I'll always remember: - A community chorus that held an annual "pin ceremony" where every year in the first 5 years each chorus member was awarded a pin for their service with their anniversary number/year, then each 5 year segment thereafter was honored; and the org's board, staff + volunteers hosted this ceremony annually; - A performing arts center that threw an end of year party for volunteers and came up with creative certificates/awards so that EVERY VOLUNTEER walked away with a special and unique recognition; - A theatre company where the actors/staff created a special show simply to honor/thank volunteers!

Opportunities to learn and grow is just as important for volunteers as it is for staff. One useful tactic is this: ASK YOUR VOLUNTEERS what would be meaningful, useful, and interesting to learn - then reflect back what they've said to you, and prioritize a few key high interest areas to provide development and learning to your volunteers.

I find hand written thank you notes, mentioning a specific thing they've done, are always appreciated. Many of those I've sent are still in the recipient's possession years later.

Great idea, @Susan Detwiler. So often grandiose morning teas and expensive dinners are much more than volunteers say they would like. Individual recognition by a note or personal email always makes a person feel valued, recognised for who they are and what they bring to their volunteering role.

This is so important: volunteers are here because they care, and they want to do well by our mission - and I've found they're just as interested in continuous improvement as staff members! At a performing arts center I had the opportunity to lead, our ushers and many front of house staff were volunteers, and our patron services team found it very helpful to provide them real-time ongoing strengths-based feedback, as well as annual light-touch reviews so they could understand the impact of their work and any improvement areas for focus.

Recognizing the importance of a well-rounded, flexible schedule is crucial when engaging volunteers. It not only demonstrates your understanding of their time constraints but also communicates respect for their personal boundaries. Volunteering is a unique gift- dedicated individuals with remarkable spirits contribute their time and skills to help you advance your dreams and goals, expecting nothing in return. It's a blessing for any business to have such passionate support. As a collaborative journey, remember to foster an environment where volunteers feel valued, appreciated, and integral to the shared success of turning aspirations into reality. Many times, nonprofits depend on the valuable work of volunteers, so highlighting one volunteer's impact might even inspire someone else to volunteer as well.
